    Sri Ram Gopal Prathmik Vidyalaya

    from Etawah, Uttar Pradesh

Yaduvir Singh, the principal, along with five teachers run a school named Sri Ram Gopal Prathmik Vidyalaya, in a village. They don't have a proper classroom to teach and lack every basic facility as there is no one to help the poor students and teachers.

"My name is Srinivas, I am a teacher at this school. The students studying here are very poor. Before joining this school they were doing labour work to earn money for their families. This is why I am running this school to give them proper education and help them be a good citizen in this society," Srinivas said.

He said that his father was a teacher and it was his vision to start a school. He always said that education is the only way a society can grow. During his time he made a room on his land for students to study. With time that wall got demolished and he lacks any kind of fund to rebuild it.

Airing his concern Srinivas says, "More than 80% of the students in the school are very poor and are unable to pay the fee. Their parents don't care about education. The teachers get minimal salaries as the school lacks any kind of funds. There is no proper school building. It's just one half-demolished room and a few areas made with the help of bamboo sticks and asbestos sheets. Seasonal changes disrupt education as well. As there is no building, teaching under the hot sun in the summers, heavy rain during the rainy season and cold during winters become very difficult. I have a fear that if the school shuts down, the students will start doing labour and other work and stop education completely,".

Srinivas said that he is incapable of building the school but wants the children to get proper education with basic facilities. He requests generous people to donate and help them build the school. He said that the students come from very financially weak families. Some of them don't have both parents while some are being brought up by single parents.

The noise from the surroundings also is a problem. It distracts the students as well as the teachers during the classes. As the present classroom is old and weak, teachers always worry about the falling of the wall as it has happened before. Thankfully, there have been no casualties so far but the fear always remains.

Ramu Tiwari, another teacher at the school speaks about how the teachers only have education and nothing else to provide the children. They can't provide facilities that other schools do. They get a negligible salary but the main concern is for the children to get educated. He requests financial help to build a proper school building.

Singh has a vision of educating the youth of the village to build a good society.

"Once I saw a father come home drunk after losing money on gambling and his child stood crying at the entrance. That is when I, along with five other teachers, decided to start a school and give education to children who can teach their parents the demerits of alcohol and gambling. We don't have a washroom for the students. Our school does not have blackboards, furniture, etc. Teachers sit on the ground and teach the class," Yaduvir said.

He said that there are 160 students in the school and only 20% of them pay fees. That is also not regular as sometimes they get fees after two to three months. During a storm the roof flies away and is fixed with the help of other villagers." We have decided to not take any fee from any student if a proper school building is built," he says.

Few other teachers of the school said that they request for financial help, not for themselves but for the students.

The helpless staff is waiting for help from generous donors to help build the school and pave way for a progressive and educated society.
