    Sneha Sarkar

    from Hugli Chinsurah, West Bengal

Mangal had always dreamt of the day he would get to see see his 16-year old daughter in a doctor's coat. But today seeing Sneha suffer terribly from cancer, in a patient's robe, has left this father helpless beyond measure.

"My child wouldn't have been fighting for her life today had we stopped that first surgery before it was to happen. She was mistakenly operated on her uterus instead of her ovary, where the tumour persists. This negligence has cost us our daughter's life and future. That small tumour has now turned into a cancerous one and instead of her weekly menstrual cycles, my daughter has been bleeding so much every single day for the past few months… blacking out with critically low blood counts." - Mangal, father

Despite undergoing two surgeries, she still has a cancerous tumour growing inside her

2 years ago, Sneha, then 14, started to have menstrual cycles that spanned much longer than the typcial time period. She would bleed profusely causing her blood counts to drop so low, that it would cause her dizziness at odd times. She was losing control over her bladder movements, but out of embarrassment, she refrained from telling her parents until her symptoms became physical. It was only when she felt a hardening and visible swelling in her belly, that her parents consulted a doctor and had her undergo surgery.

Unfortunately, her ovarian germ cell tumour went undetected at the onset and has now turned cancerous, almost to the size of a balloon. Sneha had undergone another surgery in November last year but within a month, she started bleeding again. A cancerous tumour of this size could be fatal for this young girl, who has already borne the brunt of two failed surgeries for the same.

These helpless parents can't muster the courage to reveal the truth to their daughter

Now, following accurate diagnosis, chemotherapy can shrink her tumour and it can be safely removed from her body through surgery - only if it is carried out within a week. But after spending their hard-earned money on her previous surgeries, this father doesn't know how to get 6.5 lakh rupees at such a short notice.

"My daughter had to sit through 8 CT scans, because the pain was becoming unbearable for her. Every day, we prayed for the reports to give us some hope, but her biopsy only shattered them with the news of her tumour being malignant. My daughter is so young to have this cancer... We are still struggling to process this happened to her. We lied to her that her hair fell only because of these strong antibiotics. We are still mustering the courage to tell her the truth about her cancer… She just thinks that her Ma and Baba will get her treatment done and take her back home soon." - Purnima, mother

Chemotherapy can shrink this cancerous tumour and save her precious life

Only if this surgery is done within the next few days, Sneha's ovary can be saved and she can look foward to a happy future and family life. But if it is delayed further, the cancer will soon spread to her abdomen, chest and spinal cord and ravage her weak body.

"I call her 'titli' which means butterfly because I have always wanted her to fly. Any girl of her age would wish for her father to be the wind beneath her wings, but I feel like I have failed my daughter. How will I save money for her surgery, when every penny is being used up in her chemotherapy alone? I wish my love could cure her cancer, because I can't imagine a day where I wouldn't have my daughter around me. But just love is not enough, and that is the harsh reality that is sending chills down my spine. We need lakhs of rupees and immediately." - Mangal, father

A trained Bharatanatyam dancer, Sneha is very bright in academics too. Her father had left no stone unturned on her education to make sure she keeps inching closer to her dream of pursuing medical sciences. But seeing their daughter take to the bed completely, for the past 2 years, has left these parents heartbroken. And now they, don't have much time left to save their little girl by themselves.
