Story

Sima Barman's efforts to cultivate bitter-gourd

42 year old, Sima, is a mother of two children (one son and one daughter) from a small village named Maymansing Para, in Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal. She lives there with her husband and children in a small house. Her daughter is studying in class 8 and her son is studying in class 10. Sima's husband is a farmer by occupation. He cultivates different vegetables on his farm in different seasons and sells them to the market. Sima assists her husband in doing field work after managing her household chores. Sima and her husband want to ensure they can provide for their children's continued education and see an opportunity to cultivate bitter gourd on their farmland, a summer vegetable with much demand throughout the year, to increase their income.

To this end, Sima is requesting a loan of Rs. 25,000 to buy agricultural supplies such as seeds, fertilizers and manures to grow bitter gourd. She has a lot of faith in getting ahead with this business which she projects will increase her monthly income by Rs. 500. With her profits she plans to purchase more land in the future and provide a good education for her children. The loan will be repaid in 12 months.
