“She had jaundice and was even recovering. We didn’t think something like this could happen to her.”

Mid-January this year, Bhahiya got sick with jaundice. Her parents took her to the doctor and she was under medication. She started showing signs of improvement, but then suddenly she started throwing up everything she ate. They rushed her to the doctor again, who thought the problem was beyond jaundice. He referred them to the Kanchi Kamakoti Childs Trust hospital in Chennai. Upon running a few tests, the doctors there diagnosed her with a malfunctioning kidney.

She doesn't get to live her old, normal life anymore

Bhahiya was a very healthy kid. She never had any health complaints prior to this. She was active and loved going to school. She even used to ace at academics, always getting the first rank in her class. Along with studies, Bhahiya also loved playing with her friends and her little sister. But when she fell sick, her life turned upside down. Now she’s confined to the hospital bed and doesn’t get to live the normal life of a 7-year-old anymore.

Ever since Bhahiya was diagnosed with malfunctioning kidneys, she has been taking dialysis sessions. For a 7-year-old girl, that’s a really hard state to be in. Not just that, she can’t eat whatever she likes and can’t run around and play like she used to because she’s too weak and in too much pain. Her parents, Jammerulla and Shahina have lost their sleep over their little girl. Despite her condition, she always has a smile on her face and fights her disease with courage.

Financial crisis in the family is getting in the way of her treatment

Bhahiya’s little sister Saniya is in the Kindergarten and doesn’t understand what’s wrong with her sister or why she won’t play with her anymore. She’s too young for even her parents to try and explain that to her. So they just tell her that she’s going to be fine soon, and come back home to play with her. But they fully understand the gravity of her situation and can’t do anything but feel helpless at their child’s miserable condition. Their daughter has a chance at complete recovery, but Jammerulla doesn’t have enough funds for her treatment.

Bhahiya lived with her family in a small village in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. Her father works as a contract labourer there and makes a very small amount every month. Also due to the seasonal nature of his work, his income is not stable. Now, due to lack of medical facilities there, they had to move to Chennai, and his income has come to zero.

Till now, they have spent nearly Rs 2.5 lakhs towards her treatment and in order to arrange this amount, have taken loans from friends and money lenders. Their financial condition is so bad, that they can’t even afford to rent a room in Chennai. They live and sleep at the hospital itself. Either in their daughter’s ward or in the general waiting area.

How you can help

Bhahiya’s parents are fighting against all odds to save her, but they can’t do it on their own. They need your help. Your contribution can make a big difference in their lives by giving Bhahiya a second chance at a healthy life.
