    Saptadeep Das

    from Karimganj, Assam

For Panchami and Sandeepon, the past three months have been nothing short of hell. They were looking forward to being parents for the first time, but only a month after their baby joined them earth-side, complications arose. Now their infant, Saptadeep, is grappling with a brain infection that, without medical intervention, can claim his life.

He was born with small proportions

3-month-old Saptadeep is the first baby born to Panchami and Sandeepon. He was the result of a smooth pregnancy, and was delivered through a c-section. However, his weight at birth was merely 1.2 kgs, and he spent the first few days of life in the NICU. The doctors told the couple that their baby’s small proportions are the result of reduced amniotic fluid in the mother’s womb.

“As soon as he was born, neither of us were able to get a good look at him. While they assured us everything was perfectly fine, he was far too small. So, he had to spend 13 days in the NICU. Soon they allowed us to take him home, and everything was great! We were settling into parenthood quite well, and everyone at home was so happy to have a baby to dote over. We never expected things to turn out like this…” - Panchami, mother

His head has swelled up because of fluid build-up
A month after his birth, these parents began noticing some alarming changes in their baby that made them extremely anxious. For one, he would have recurring high fevers that caused his whole body to tremble, especially his hands and legs. They also noticed his forehead had expanded, and his eyes had begun to bulge out of his head.

As days passed, we realised his condition was worsening and wasted no time in approaching a local hospital to get him checked out. They had to run so many tests on him to figure out what was going on, and when the results were finally out, we were told he had excess fluid in his brain, causing his head to swell. They weren’t equipped to treat him, so we had to take him to a bigger hospital.” - Sandeepon, father

He has a fungal infection in his brain, only urgent treatment can save him

Saptadeep was diagnosed with Hydrocephalus, a condition where cerebrospinal fluid (a clear fluid that bathes the brain and spinal column) accumulates in the cavities deep within the brain. The fluid build-up puts pressure on the brain and can cause severe damage to the tissues, resulting in a range of brain function problems.

From their hometown in Assam, these distressed parents rushed to Chennai with their ailing baby. He was admitted there for several days and even underwent a procedure to drain the excess fluid from his brain. But Saptadeep’s battle is far from over and his life is still in danger. Only days ago, he was detected to have a fungal brain infection and was put on antibiotics. His treatment needs to continue in order for him to recover.

His parents can’t afford his treatment, they need your help

“Back home I work at a local grocery store and earn about 5,000 rupees a month. I am the sole breadwinner in my family of 6, and my salary is barely enough to get us by. I’ve spent everything I had, and even borrowed from moneylenders. Now, the doctor’s say that my baby needs continued treatment that will cost me at least 10 lakh rupees. It’s just impossible for me to arrange for that sum, when I’m already neck-deep in debt. I don’t know what to do!” - Sandeepon.

These parents are in desperate need of your kindness and generosity. You can help them save their only baby. Click here to donate.
