“We are poor, illiterate people. We could never imagine in our dreams that this deformity from birth can damage my daughter’s future.”, says Nirdesh, father of 13-year-old Sandhya. If her treatment delays, this poor girl might end up paralyzed.
The Family thought Sandhya had a minor deformity that will be solved as she grows up.
Sandhya was born in a small village of Durgapur in West Bengal. Born in a poor, uneducated family, no one gave much of a thought to her deformed spine. Her family members, relatives, and neighbors came up with different ideas of treatment like giving her oil massage, taking her to nearby temples, giving her proper rest etc.
Her father Nirdesh had tried everything possible to figure what is wrong with his daughter. They took her to local hospitals, tried different types of treatment but nothing seemed to work out. Nirdesh wanted to help her child come out of this problem but did not know what to do until recently when a friend of his suggested him to come to Bangalore. In July 2017 Nirdesh with his wife and daughter came to Bangalore.
Nirdesh has to quit his job for his daughter’s treatment and now he has no money to manage his daily expenses
Nirdesh works as a daily waged laborer. There is no guarantee that he would get work every day. Sometimes he has to even travel to other villages in search of work. To add up to the misery he had to leave everything and come to Baoldngalore for Sandhya. Now he has no source of income and whatever savings is completely used up in doctor visits and daily expenses.
“I am the only earning member in the house. I have 3 daughters and wife dependent on me. I have absolutely no income now since I have left my village.”
It is very difficult for her to walk or sit in a place for a long time. She has to walk for 3 km every day to go to school. Her father just wants to finish her surgery and give her a normal life. Sandhya is a very sensitive kid, this disorder has made her very depressed. The only people she loves spending time with are her sisters, and staying away from them is very depressing for her.
She still needs 3.5 lakhs for the Surgery
Doctors have advised Sandhya to undergo the surgery as soon as possible or else it may lead to paralysis in future. The surgery would cost them 5 Lakhs. For a daily wage laborer, it is impossible to afford such a huge amount all by himself. His friends and relatives have come forward and collectively contributed 1.5 Lakhs. She still needs 3.5 lakhs to undergo the surgery.
“Poor people like us are not even allowed to dream, I feel so helpless seeing my daughter suffer every day but I cannot do anything for her. I just want to see my daughter move around like other normal girls. This deformity is ruining her life. I can never forgive myself if Sandhya is paralyzed due to my inability to arrange money for her surgery”
