Sai’s sickness was so severe that in just 20 days he needed a surgery
“He was running a high temperature and was also vomiting. It took us a long while to figure out that it wasn’t typhoid or dengue and that his kidneys were not functioning properly. The doctors in Hyderabad told us that he needed an urgent surgery. Sai got very scared when he heard about it - he didn’t want anyone of us to leave his side. It was painful for us to see him lying down there, afraid and in pain.” - Kamala.
Sai has been diagnosed with Atypical hemolytic-uremic syndrome. It is a disease that affects the normal functioning of the kidneys. Abnormal blood clots form in small blood vessels in the kidneys and restrict the blood flow. This condition is also characterized by low red blood cells and platelet count and can eventually lead to acute kidney failure.
However, despite a surgery, Sai isn’t out of dangerA daily wager, Shankar earns just about enough to support his family. But Sai’s unexpected sickness threw the entire family off track. They left their home in Mancharla, in Andhra Pradesh and travelled to Hyderabad to get Sai the surgery he needed.
“We borrowed from friends and have spent over 4 lakhs for the surgery that Sai required. But despite that, he is not getting any better. He speaks very less and often complains of a pain in his stomach. As he lies down in the bed, all quiet and pale, I can hardly recognize my own son. He needs another surgery but I don’t know how I can arrange for money without any help.” - Shankar.
