Story

"These past 9 years have been absolutely gruelling. Not once has Reshu had the chance to experience a proper childhood, because of his condition. We’ve been running from one hospital to another hoping something, anything, could put an end to his suffering. And now when we know what he needs, we are failing to save him because we’re financially incapable of it.” - Saraswati, mother

He’s been getting blood transfusions since he was only one month old

For 9-year-old Reshu, who has suffered from a blood disorder called Thalassemia practically all his life, the hospital has become his second home. His body is producing lower-than-normal amounts of an oxygen-carrying protein called haemoglobin, an important part of red blood cells. He was only 5 months old when he was diagnosed, but he’s been getting blood transfusions since he was a baby.

“A month after his birth in 2012, our Reshu ran a very high fever. When it wouldn’t reduce, we took him to a local hospital and they told us his blood levels had dropped, so he would need a transfusion. The thought of needles piercing my newborn’s body killed me. But after a 4-day hospital stay, he’d gotten much better. We had been so relieved at the time, not expecting everything that was to come.” - Babloo, father

That was only the beginning of Reshu's long and arduous battle. It was like an endless loop where, month after month, his fever would return and his parents would have to rush him to the hospital.

“We were referred to a bigger hospital in Lucknow, as the doctors suspected that his frequent fever meant something was seriously wrong. Their suspicions had been spot on, and our son was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder. They told us that his body isn’t producing enough haemoglobin. It was the first time we were hearing of such a thing and we had been absolutely terrified...” - Saraswati

A bone marrow transplant is his only option, but his parents can’t afford it

Reshu has to be administered a blood transfusion every 15 days. Even a day’s delay can prove dangerous, as he gets extremely weak and feverish. After years of trying to free their son from his suffering, Babloo and Saraswati learned that a bone marrow transplant could be the answer to their prayers.

“At first we had no idea what it was. But then we reached out to two families whose children had the same condition as our Reshu, and they explained to us how a bone marrow transplant would help him. We immediately set off to Delhi seeking this treatment for my son. But as soon as we heard the cost that it came at, we felt all our hopes shatter…” - Saraswati

“I only make 400 to 500 rupees a day as a little knick-knacks stall owner. With such a small income, there is no way I can arrange for 30.75 lakh rupees so my son can undergo this treatment. I've spent everything I had, over the course of these last 9 years, on the blood transfusions and medicines that have kept my son alive. Now, we’ve come this far, yet we’re failing to get him the one thing that can help him live a normal life...” - Babloo

Reshu knows of his condition and for a boy of his age, he has shown incredible strength and resilience in his fight to survive. Now, hearing that the bone marrow transplant could put an end to the painful treatments and countless hospital visits has given him newfound hope. But his parents don’t know how they will afford the expensive procedure.

They need your help. With your contribution Reshu can get a bone marrow transplant and live a happy life with his family. Click here to donate.
