“Will she be okay? My Radha will get better, right? She’s going to be alright?”
These questions have been haunting Manini for the past few months. Every morning, when her husband was still home, she used to ask him while he got ready to go out. When she went to her neighbor's place where she washed dishes, she would ask them what they thought. While at the hospital, she asks every doctor and nurse she sees. And every night, when the lights are out and she’s lying on the floor, she asks God.
But no matter whom she asks, how many times she asks, she always only gets one of two answers: either a pained smile, or silence.
9-year-old Radha was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia – blood cancer – approximately 5 months ago. It had started as a fever that Debaraj and Manini had been quick to show to the only doctor in their village. The tablets they had received controlled her temperature for a few days, but soon she was burning up again. Worried, Debaraj had taken little Radha to the closest town, nearly an hour away. It was here that they found out their precious little girl has cancer, and needs chemotherapy to survive it.
Her father can't be with her during her fight against cancer
It's been nearly 4 weeks since Debaraj left little Radha under his wife Manini's sole care, going wherever his work takes him to earn enough money for his precious daughter. Manini has been struggling to stay strong in her husband's absence, taking care of her daughter day in and day out.“Over the past few months, my Radha has grown very weak. She can barely get out of bed without my help, and it’s like she has lost all her appetite. Small, daily activities tire her so much that she sometimes collapses, unable to breathe. Radha has excellent chances of recovery
Doctors have told the family that little Radha has excellent chances of recovery, if she gets treatment right now. She needs to undergo urgent chemotherapy to kill the cancerous cells in her body, and start the healing process. Debaraj has been trying, begging and borrowing for months now, but he has not been able to raise the required 3 lakhs. He has been working night and day, in his daily wage job, but both he and Manini know that he cannot earn so much money in such a short time.
