On New Year's day last year, she was to make a new beginning. A new job in a new city...but destiny had something else in store for Kakul. The communication expert was diagnosed with Acute Myelomonoctic Leukemia. In the ensuing months, she waged a stirring fight -- ever smiling and positive all through. By August, the doctors declared she had won the battle and we all...family and friends, felt the worst was over. But just months later, the dreaded Blood Cancer struck again.
Kakul is now back in the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer hospital in Delhi, fighting a deadlier avatar of the disease. Doctors say she has to undergo a bone marrow tranesplant, a procedure which will cost Rs 50 lakh.
Having spent almost 30 lakh in her earlier round of hospitalisation, the financial burden of the treatment now required is well beyond the means of her family, as it would be for any one from a middle class background.
Efforts to get help from NGO/government has not been very encouraging. Relatives and friends are rallying around but it's just not enough.
