"She is in hospital for the past 6 months, taking injections every day, witnessing hair falling in clumps. After every chemo she suffers from severe fever and infections. She is too young to understand what 'cancer' can do to her. Despite all this, there is only one thing that can bring smile to her face - going to school. Once in a month, I take her to school, that is the only day she can step out from hospital and see her friends. Her friends often don't recognize her. That is what cancer has done to her." - Devi, Mother.

She was born after 13 years, and now at only 6 years of age, cancer may take her life

Devi and Sekar waited for 13 long years to have Joshika. Sekar works in a lab in the hospital and he used to take her with him. Sekar recalls how she told him one day, "Appa, when I grow up I'll become a doctor and you can work in my hospital lab." Devi and Sekar couldn't be any happier. She was very active, smart and cheerful. It just started with a fever that refused to go away for weeks. Later, scan reports revealed that she has a rare type of cancer that affects her blood cells, without intense chemo and bone marrow transplant, it would turn fatal.

"I knew it is cancer but I couldn't come to terms with it. I did not tell my wife then, I was hoping that doctors would tell us that there is nothing serious, nothing could prepare me to hear that word from the doctor. When doctors explained us her condition, we broke down." - Sekar.

"Doctor uncle, I have enough blood now, please let me go to school" says Joshika

Joshika had to start chemo immediately and she was told that she needs blood to become strong. It wasn't easy, she had endless questions and her parents had to come up with different stories every day. There are times she couldn't even get up from the bed, she throws up everything she eats and becomes extremely weak. When she feels a little better she asks her father to take her to school. Once a month, he takes her to school. She sits in a separate bench because she is prone to infections. She feels dejected when her classmates fail to recognize her. It has been 6 months since she was confined to hospital.

"Her teachers told her that she can directly go to 3rd grade but she insisted that she writes her exams. One day, I took her to school, her teacher asked her to write 2 times table, she got '5 star' for it and she was so happy. She does not understand why she has to be in hospital. She is begging us to take home but we have no other choice, she has along way to go, without transplant she'll lose her life any moment." - Devi.

"We found a donor for her but I cannot afford the transplant"

Sekar works as a lab technician and earns Rs 20,000 per month. He was not able to be regular to his work because he had to take care of his daughter. He might be forced to quit his job because he had taken a lot of leaves. He has spent 12 lakh so far for the treatment by selling his jewelry, borrowing money from friends and relatives.

Sekar needs 30 lakh for the transplant, he has applied for a government scheme through which he might get 10 lakh but he has no other means to arrange the rest of the funds. Joshika's aggressive cancer and can kill her any moment and they cannot delay the transplant further.
