Jitendra Mehta, 65, is my father who is suffering from severe case of viral meningo encephalitis. He is being treated at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai.
My father is battling this condition for past one month and requires ventilator support for breathing. He is also in coma and does not have any conciousness since past one month.
Meningo Encephalitis or meningitis is infection of the brain, and can cause severe permanent damage even after it is cured. Out of 100 viruses that can infect brain, treatment is only available for one virus (Herpes Simplex). For other remaining viruses, doctors say that we have to wait for the virus to kill itself. In my father's case, doctors have already ruled out the treatable Herpes Simplex, making it a more complicated case.
The only option that we have is to wait for the virus to run its course. And while that happens my father is being periodically jolted by other infections. He has had urine infection twice and also pneumonia due to extended ventilator support. We do not know how long will it take for him to come out of coma and even if he does, how much will he be able to recover. No neurologist or doctor can answer this for us as well.
The hospital bills have already reached Rs. 15,00,000. The estimated total cost including further treatment will be around Rs. 25,00,000.
Why should you contribute?
My father is retired with no pension or supportive income. I am a software developer with usual wage. The illness struck catastrophically with just 2 days of fever. The medical insurance has also not been of much help as it was only for Rs. 1,00,000. We have spent all we could and are still Rs. 10,00,000 short.
We request everyone to pray for us, and contribute as much as possible to allow us to sustain the treatment and give my father time to recover from this deadly infection.
