Story

My daughter who was very active and never sat quietly for a second is now bedridden in a hospital from the past 45 days. She silently stares at the pile of little toys that her father bought to divert her mind from the pain. I feel terrible when she asks with teary eyes, ‘Amma, why did he get these tiny toys for me? Will I never be able to ride my cycle and play with skipping rope?’. As a mother, I cannot dare to tell her the truth that she might soon die if help doesn’t arrive on time,” - Ramadevi, Jayasri’s mother.

The fatal disease took away this 10-year-old’s childhood

Jayasri would always want to go to school even when ill, because she loved it more than anything else. One day, she came back wearily, unable to even carry her school bag and lunch box. She dropped them near the gate and was too weak to take a step forward. Her worried parents rushed her to the hospital. All the way, she was struggling to breathe.

“The doctors told us that her blood count was less. My husband and I immediately admitted her in the hospital and she underwent a blood transfusion. They further suggested a bone marrow test for her as the symptoms were of blood cancer. We feared for her life and took her to a private hospital in Hyderabad. Every second felt like an hour when we were waiting for the test reports. We held each other's hands and prayed until the doctor reached us. By the look on his face I could tell that my daughter had blood cancer, we both broke down and it took us a while to recover,” - Ramadevi.

Only urgent treatment can help Jayasri win this battle of life

This 11-year-old is suffering from Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML), a form of severe blood cancer that starts in the bone marrow where the cells don’t mature the way they are supposed to and spread rapidly to the blood and to other parts of the body. Jayasri urgently needs intense chemotherapy treatment for a month and a consolidation therapy for 2 years. Without which cancer will spread across her body and will soon kill her.

“It is unbearable to see how my daughter cries out loudly in pain whenever they put a needle in her. Despite all the pain that she is going through, she keeps smiling whenever her father enters the room and the moment he steps out she starts weeping again. It is very overwhelming to witness how my young and beautiful daughter is trying to give false hopes to her father. With great difficulty, we have managed to begin the treatment but we have nothing left to continue it,” - Ramadevi.

Father who earns Rs 200 a day cannot afford a treatment that can save his daughter

Venkateshwarulu is a daily wage laborer who works in a cement factory. He struggles to run his family on his minimal income of Rs 200 a day. He took a huge loan for tests and the initial round of treatment for his daughter, and is unable to continue it. Now the family is neck-deep in debt.

“My husband ran to every person he knows and borrowed money to save our child, We already spent around 11 lakhs until now, an amount which we have never seen in our lives. And we need 10 lakhs more to help our child survive. We did everything we could and now we are lost in every way. Please help our daughter live,” - Ramadevi.
