Dear madam/sir,

My name is Sourabha Rao, a writer currently living in Bengaluru. I’ve recently come upon the opportunity of pursuing higher studies in the United States and this is my humble appeal for financial aid.

I was immensely fortunate to have had great teachers for languages in high school. My love for literature, for writing began at an early age. When I was 17, my father one day abandoned us and as the only child, my most important responsibility – a privilege, I consider – has always been taking care of my mother. I worked part-time jobs after college and over weekends. After graduation, I worked in the IT industry for 19 months. But I personally found no purpose in it and always knew writing was my calling.

I became a Content Writer for the ‘books’ category at Flipkart in 2014. Since 2015, I’ve been the Staff Writer at India’s leading travel-and-photography company, Toehold. I’ve worked on many national and international projects, including a documentary on sugarcane farmers in India, for IFC of the World Bank. I have collaborated with the creator of the renowned Zen Pencils comics, being the first one to translate them into an Indian language (Kannada).

I’m also a columnist at TheState.News. As a freelance journalist, my writing attempts and poetry have been published in major Kannada newspapers. Kannada literature has seen some world-class writers and poets. Being proficient in Kannada and English, an eventual dream is to translate some untranslated works of excellence that make sincere efforts to understand the world and the human condition in it.

I wish to learn the nuances of Creative Writing better at ‘The New School’, where I’ve been admitted for the two-year MFA Program. It’s the grad school where radiant minds like Tennessee Williams and James Baldwin have studied. To be one of less than 20 people selected from across the world is reassuring, humbling and an honour, but I’m unable to afford this dream financially. I’m thus seeking financial help based solely on my merit and accomplishments. My tuition fee is about $34K and I have received the institutional scholarship of $8,930. I am confident of turning this opportunity into a career path focusing on contributing my bit to the world around me through writing.

With a steadfast love for language and the art of writing, I wish to pursue my dream which is beyond me. To add a verse – as small as it may be – to the eternal song of life, just as Walt Whitman cajoles us to do.

Sincerely,
Sourabha Rao
