Help My Mom in Her Fight Against Cancer

Hello! I am Kannan Anandakrishnan and I live in Bengaluru, with my mother and younger brother. My mother, Rajathi, is 50 years old and in 2015, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent a surgical procedure called a right breast mastectomy, along with chemotherapy, before and after the surgery, in Pondicherry. The surgery appeared to be a success and the doctor told us that all was well, and asked us to follow-up with him regularly. She was fine for the following 10 months but all of a sudden, one day, she started coughing up blood and complained of chest pain. We took her back to the doctor in September 2016, and he referred us to the Cancer Institute, Pondicherry. They asked us to get an MRI and PETCT scan done, and the results of the scans turned our world upside down.

The cancer had spread from her breasts to her brain, lungs, liver, bones and was in metastasis. The doctor at the Cancer Institute told us that it was impossible to cure her and that she only had 6 months to 1 year to live, and a little more, if palliative treatment worked.

Since then, she has undergone around 28 rounds of chemotherapy and 27 rounds of radiotherapy. Thankfully, the treatments have had little side-effects. Currently, she is being treated at the Apollo Cancer Research Centre, in Bengaluru.

In an earlier biopsy, done in 2015, her ER/PR/HER2 were all-negative. She was given ‘Germcitabine’ and ‘Carboplatin’ for chemotherapy. Last September, when we took a new biopsy, the results came back with ER/PR being negative but HER2 was found to be positive (3+ score). Upon our oncologist’s recommendation she was given, ‘Herceptin’, which offers targeted therapy for HER2 +ve breast cancer. She was also administered ‘Canmab’ and ‘Docetaxel’ for chemo, but they did not yield any results, and she got new lumps in her chest during the course of the treatment.
As per a recent PETCT scan report, the cancer’s spread is progressing in her brain, bone, lungs, and liver. We tried oral chemotherapy with tablets like ‘Lapatinib’ and ‘Capicitabine’, but they had little effect, and she suffered from seizures last month due to brain metastasis and blood leakage in her chest lumps.

Our oncologist has now recommended that she be given a drug called ‘Kadcyla’, which has historically proved to be useful in the treatment of advanced breast cancer metastasis for whom Herceptin did not work. This drug has done wonders for many breast cancer patients, and has helped them live longer while also improving their quality of life.

So, we're hoping that this drug will help my mother in her fight against cancer. Despite her condition, she has a positive mind-set, and is determined to not let cancer defeat her.

Sadly, for us, ‘Kadcyla’ is astronomically expensive. It costs 2,50,000 INR per 160 mg and if it is purchased 6 times in this dosage, from the same manufacturer (‘Roche’ in this case), it will be free for the remainder of the treatment. Our oncologist has said, that she would need to consume the drug for the rest of her life, if she responds well to it.

So, in the short term, we are looking at a minimum expenditure of 15,00,000 INR for purchasing this drug 6 times. This is over and above the expenditure we’ve to incur on consultations and other tests, treatments, which by itself, is significant.

My father passed away 12 years ago and I am the sole breadwinner in my family. My brother stays at home with our mother, to take care of her. My mother does not have any insurance, and I have blown through all of my savings on her treatment, while also having had to take EMIs, and credit-card loans. We’ve already spent over 10,00,000 INR on her treatment thus far, and as I explained earlier, we have to spend a lot more, moving forward. As such, it would be impossible for us to do this on our own, and I have created this campaign, to seek financial help from anyone who is willing to help.

Your contribution will mean the world to us and will not be forgotten, and it may just give my mother a fighting chance, a chance, I believe every cancer patient deserves.

After experiencing seizures on June 3rd, my mom becomes mentally disoriented and confined to wheelchair. She lost her consciousness and can't remember where she is, day/time, difficulty in speaking, memory loss and experiencing hallucinations. Oncologist in my hometown examined her and told she's not in a condition to take any treatment for cancer.

Last week I brought her to my uncle's home in Pondicherry and she slowly stopped taking foods, fluids and complaining of body pain, loss of appetite. We consulted palliative care specialist and he's prescribed medicines for pain relief, anxiety, sleep etc, but she couldn't swallow the tablets and when we give it in liquid form, she vomits them. She feels intolerable pain everytime we lift her in bed or take her to toilet.

As her food intake reduced drastically and severe pain, we taken her to nearby hospital for supportive treatment. Now she's been given liquid foods in feeding tube put through nose and in oxygen support as her saturation level is low (due to cancer lesions in lungs, brain).

When she's awake my mom screams to remove the support (feeding/oxygen tube) and we can't pacify her as she lost her ability of understanding what we're saying. So doctors are giving her sedatives and put her to sleep all day. We're planning to keep her in hospital till her body health improves and if she starts taking food normally.

Though I'm with her always, it's been more than two weeks since I had a interaction with my mom and I doubt whether I can ever again. As much as my brother and I try to remain practical and positive, it breaks me everyday to see her in this living dead condition.

Everyday morning we wake up to the sound of her screaming in pain till her throat becomes dry, lose her energy to speak and all I could do is to hold, kiss her and say everything will be alright.

I pray to the almighty to free her from these sufferings, pain sooner by one way or another. Please keep her in your prayers.

Dear Supporters,

Thank you for the wonderful support. My mother's health deteriorates every day. Since the 5th chemo on May 5th, she's unable to walk without support and it worsened as she fallen down 2,3 times and her walking ability is totally impacted. Also, She's losing her consciousness 2,3 times every day and her appetite is gone.

Upon examination, the oncologist told that disease is progressing faster in the brain, which causes these seizure episodes. Since we already gave radiotherapy for her brain thrice(30 cycles), radiotherapy is ruled out by them. The neurologist examined and said cancer may spread to her spine which is impacting her walking abilities.

So We almost decided to stop the treatment and to go for the palliative care at home. But her vitals were in good condition, so Oncologist suggested to give the 6th chemo which would increase the quality of life and also the drug will be given for free after this.

On Saturday after her 6th chemo, I took her to my native(Tindivanam) near Pondicherry where my grandma, uncles live. Yesterday she got two seizures in the span of an hour and currently in the hospital taking anti-seizure medications.

I plan to keep my mom here in my native going forward and discussing with oncologists on further plans and palliative care. Words can't describe the tragic of seeing your loved ones suffer in front of your eyes, especially the mother who gave birth to us in this world.

Thank you for the wonderful support. Please do pray for her health. Will keep you posted.
