“I can never forget that day. I felt very scared. My house sunk into an uncomfortable silence. Everyone silently wept in different corners of the house. Nobody knew what to say. Nobody had the courage to say it out loud. Such words are not generally uttered in households, for fear it may really happen. Here, it had really taken form. We did not know what was the right thing to do next,” Hare recalls the scariest day of his life.
Hare Krushna Sahu is an auto driver in Orissa. He works very hard to run the household and educate his 2 sons Debraj(20) and Devanand(15).
“My older son has finished his Diploma. I must send him to college. He wants to become an engineer. I have been working very hard over the past couple of months to collect some money for his education. The younger one has also just finished his 12th standard. He also must go to college. After all, he wants to become a doctor. I had never imagined life would become so cruel.”
When life changed overnight for the whole Sahu family:
Hare had been having a headache for some time. Like any ordinary person, he took a tablet and went about his day making trips on his auto rickshaw, with only the thought of educating his 2 sons and saving them from a life like his. The headache persisted, and he had to go to a doctor.
A CT scan followed, and the diagnosis shattered the family’s little world. Hare had developed a Tumour, and needed immediate and advanced medical care. They were advised to immediately rush to Bangalore for treatment.
“I can never forget that day. I felt very scared. My house sunk into an uncomfortable silent.
This meant that the only source of income for the household was blocked. With Hare leaving for Bangalore, there was no income for the family. He had no money to even start his journey. He sold the only asset he had: a small patch of land, and left his home with hope in his eyes and prayers in his heart.
His sons, still young and helpless were desperate to help. They started taking tuitions in the evening to be able to help their father.
“We never had much, but my income was never too less to keep my family happy. They trusted me, and were very satisfied with whatever little I could give them. My sons aspired to study hard and do well in life, so that they could take care of me later, and show me the side of life I could never see due to my limited means.”
Why they need help:
Hare needs an urgent surgery to remove the tumour. With his travel to and stay in Bangalore besides his tests and trips to hospitals, the money he got is draining fast. The procedure would cost him around Rs. 1,70,000. The two young boys are working very hard and taking tuitions to help in their father’s treatment. However, the surgery is urgent, and the amount is too big for them to earn or collect within a few days.
Any help on your end could be a great addition to their efforts to save their father
