Raising funds for Sunrise Community Centre and self directed learning

Hello World,

We come to you with a funding request on behalf of the Egalitarian Education Foundation (EEF), a registered NGO based in Kharadi, Pune from the Indian state of Maharashtra.

The EEF runs the Sunrise Community Center: a space dedicated to upholding the values of self-directed learning.

We dedicate our existence to kids from lower income backgrounds and hope to make our space their universe.

We are enhancing the lives of kids within our local community and outside, by providing them the environment and guidance to identify and pursue their own learning needs.

Our kids have used our space to explore their artistic skills, build cognitive traits, participate in community building, and play competitive sports.

Our primary need for funds is to finance the many learning needs of the children that come to our center. We hope to inspire you with our story and vision so you can rest assured that your donation is put to great use.

Your funding is likely to,
  1. Pay for a kid’s learning need (fees for a dance instructor or English lessons)
  2. Help us invest in learning infrastructure (like buying building blocks for younger kids or investing in a 3D printer)
  3. Finance real-estate expansion plans so we can accommodate more footfall
  4. Cover operational expenses for running the Sunrise Community Center
We are indebted to your generosity and your commitment to help us achieve our goals. Our mission is sincere and our existence incomplete without your patronage. Thank you all!

Our History

Our space was founded by 2 Teach for India Fellows Harsh Maheshwari and Manoj Iyer in summer 2013 who were undertaking their fellowship at the Sunrise English Medium school in Kharadi.

Sunrise Community Center (or just Centre as fondly called by our kids) was then used as an after-school place where kids could explore their hobbies, participate in skill building workshops, strengthen their local community, and pursue their academic goals. Over the years, we have built a repository of resources – board games, a library, art supplies, musical instruments, cooking equipment, sports equipment, computers, tablets and other useful odds and ends, that close to 300 children have come to use in various capacities.

Dear Donors,We are grateful for your patronage. We have extended the deadline to withdraw funds until Feb 29th 2020, so we can meet our target. We look forward to utilizing your generous donations to further our mission in 2020. Among other things, it will be used to finance further learning needs, investing in learning infrastructure and supporting our project based learning methodology.  The year 2019 was a very fulfilling one for us. Below are highlights of the year gone by.
1) Social Media Foot Print: We increased our presence on social media and we have a fully functioning social media volunteer and team that keeps our virtual profiles on Instagram and Facebook active with regular updates. Do follow us on

2) Project Based Learning: During our first week of project based learning, the kids played with lights, switches, wires and learned basic circuits and torch making. They used this to learn about light painting. We have many more weeks of such learning scheduled this year along with a final show and tell week within the community.

2) Showcasing: Our kids got the opportunity to monetize all the art skills they have built. We conducted workshops, sold Origami art and exhibited at stalls at various events.

Furthering Learning Needs: One of our kids is now pursuing full time professional chess guidance while others satiated their inventive bent of mind by making things by themselves

Mentorship and Career guidance: We provide resources and career support to kids dream of serving our country as well as mentored a child to excel in the Mahindra World College admissions process

Community Building: We conducted a few field trips, organized many get togethers and potlucked.

Swapping Roles: Our older students are now becoming teachers and spreading the wisdom to our junior members. Kids conducted projects on gender equality and art and craft making and hope to continue this year.
