Help Buy Running Shoes for Children at Diksha

About DIKSHA

DIKSHA is a non-profit school in Palam Vihar, Gurgaon, India established to provide free and quality education to about 300 children from low-income families in the neighborhood. Children are typically from migrant labor families living in jhuggis (make-shift homes) and belong to economically weaker sections living in Chauma village, Dharam colony, Carterpuri and New Palam Vihar, found loitering in the streets begging for alms or drop outs from up to three previous schools.

C.B.S.E based academic education is provided by salaried teachers who receive on-going professional development and are mentored by experienced volunteers. Children are encouraged to learn a variety of extra-curricular activities such as folk art, dance, drama, music and yoga and participate in inter-house and inter-NGO sports meets. Diksha supplies a nutritious mid-day meal (prepared on the premises daily) and a snack to each child in addition to uniforms, shoes and books. Periodic dental and medical check up is given to all students by volunteering organizations and doctors. Parents are an integral part of Diksha and participate in regular parent-teacher meetings and workshops on hygiene, nutrition and non-violence. Parents are encouraged to lend their expertise to support the school.

About the Campaign

Children are encouraged strongly to participate in sports activities. We now have a full time sports teacher who is dedicated in bringing out the best in sports-inclined children.
Every year at the annual Inter-NGO Sports meet our children excel. This year they have brought home 4 trophies and 22 medals. The trophies include the Best March Past and the Best Overall Team plus best girl and boy athletes. Only the 20 participants receive sponsored athletic shoes just a week prior to the Event.
However our 300 children have only one pair of school shoes which gets worn out during regular games practice. A pair of athletic shoes would serve them very well in all sports activities.

How can you help?
A small contribution of approximately Rs 170 (about $2.5 US) will help a child receive a pair of running shoes which could motivate him/her to participate in sports.

We hope you will spread the word to your friends and family!
