    Bhuvaneswari

    from Chennai, Tamil Nadu

Seven years ago, on a day like any other, Bhuvaneswari had been doing her daily chores and chatting with her mother, when all her movement ceased suddenly. She stopped talking, and was not able to swallow the water she was drinking. The right side of her entire body had become numb, including her right arm and right leg. She would later learn that she had a stroke, due to severe kidney disease.

As soon as she was diagnosed, instead of being a pillar of support, her husband took off stating that he couldn't take care of her. Now, she is also grappling with severe liver disease and needs a transplant urgently.

“I cannot move around much; I need help for everything. My stomach has bulged out, and there is significant swelling in my legs too. Living has become extremely painful. Now, along with dialysis, I go to the hospital every week to get the fluid out of my tummy too. Sometimes I feel like giving up and dying but I am determined to survive for my daughter.” – Bhuvaneswari

A shocking tale of kidney dialysis leading to liver damage

After being diagnosed with kidney disease following her stroke in 2013, Bhuvaneswari had been on dialysis every week. Three years ago, she went to a new centre to undergo dialysis, because the regular clinic she was going to could not accommodate her, and as fate would have it, she contracted Hepatitis-C from the contaminated medical apparatus. Ever since then, her liver has been deteriorating. And now, it is so damaged that she cannot survive without an urgent liver transplant.

“I have been suffering for so many years now. I have not been able to even take care of my 10-year-old daughter properly. Sometimes, I wonder what kind of mother I am because the guilt consumes me. But my daughter does not complain as she understands my situation well.” - Bhuvaneswari

Bhuvaneswari’s old parents cannot afford to save her

Ever since her husband left her, Bhuvaneswari has been dependent on her aged parents. Her father works as a security guard at an apartment in Chennai, and earns a meagre Rs. 7, 000. Bhuvaneswari’s mother stays at home to help her with hospital visits and does household work, including taking care of her granddaughter who goes to a government school. They have used up all their savings in Bhuvaneswari’s treatment and have nothing left.

I am supposed to take care of my parents in their old age, but look what is happening. They are running from pillar to post trying to save me, but it has been very difficult. We are not well-off, and we don’t even have relatives or friends who can help us. We are completely helpless.” - Bhuvaneswari, tearfully
