    Basavarj Jeratagi

    from Vijayapura, Karnataka

Basavaraja's family has seen him happy and lively for most of his life. He used to actively go to school and play around with his friends all the time until life struck him with a deadly disease that grew like a parasite. So, when the child was diagnosed with lymphoblastic lymphoma after he fell sick, his parents were left stunned and did not know what to do.

“He was hearty and healthy, until his stomach started to swell up. When we consulted a doctor, we found out that fluid had accumulated in his stomach and he also had a cancerous mass there. We were shocked. Coming from a small village, we’d never seen or heard of children suffering from such a serious disease. It is life-threatening, they told us, which means it could kill him…” - Shanthappa, father

A cancerous mass in his stomach is claiming his life, and causing him respiratory trouble

Basavaraja was diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic lymphoma, a type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, or cancer of the lymph tissue. It typically manifests as a mass in the chest that can be aggressive and progress rapidly, without proper treatment. The 11-year-old also suffers from severe breathing issues, owing to the mass in his abdomen, with reactive effusion, or fluid retention between body tissues, in the lung and the area surrounding his heart.

He is struggling to breathe, and needs respiratory support. The more we delay his treatment, the more his life is in danger. I feel so helpless, watching him lay on this bed and fighting for his life. We are crushed by the burden of our sinking finances, and don’t have a single rupee that we can put into his treatment.” - Bagamma, mother

They sold their only means of livelihood to foot his medical bills, but it wasn’t enough

Basavaraja belongs to a family of farmers, and even though his parents struggle with their income and livelihood, they have left no stone unturned to treat their child. They sold the only piece of land they owned, in order to procure funds for their son’s treatment. However, the cost of treatment exceeded their expectations, and flipped their world upside down. Now, with no funds in hand and a meagre income of INR. 8,000 per month, the family is on the verge of breaking down.

Disheartened and seeing Basavaraja's hardships, his parents have become desperate for his treatment as he is all they have. They have begun to give up on the situation as they do not have enough money and are deprived of any resources to pay for even their regular expenses. All they want is a disease-free life for their child, and for that, Basavaraj needs to undergo intensive chemotherapy to kill the cancer cells in his body.

We are scurrying to gather 20 lakh rupees, but it is impossible for me, a mere farmer, to arrange such a huge amount on my own. It feels like even our prayers to spare our son his life, are falling on deaf ears. Please, we beg of you to save our son. He is our life and we wish for nothing else but for him to make it out of this alive. We can’t lose him to this disease.” - Shanthappa, father

Despite life kept throwing curveballs at the family, they have gathered their courage to ask for help for Basavaraja's treatment. Shantappa and Bagamma are battling a financial crisis and are on the verge of losing everything. They seek your help and hope you can support Basavaraja's dream of leading an ordinary life.
