"My baby was taken to the ICU as soon as he was born, he was struggling to breathe. I did not understand what was happening to him. Now he has painful mouth sores and is not able to drink even a drop of milk. Our relatives say that babies with heart disease wont make it but how can we give up? We have not held him even once in our arms." - Meenakshi, mother of the 9-day-old baby boy. 

Their baby is out of ventilator support, but not out of danger yet

Meenakshi and Jaganathan did not miss any tests during her pregnancy. They were excited about the arrival of their first baby and had so many plans. It came as a big blow to them when, as soon as he was born, the doctors said that their baby has heart disease. Jaganathan took him to different hospitals for a second opinion, and all the tests came back with the same result. Finally, when they reached a hospital in Chennai, the doctors said he needs to have heart surgery at the earliest - he had severe breathing trouble and was immediately placed on ventilator support.

"It was hard for us to believe that he has heart disease, he's just a newborn. We thought he would be fine soon but we were wrong. He turns blue whenever he cries. He starts to cry even if I give him a sip of water. I get to see him only 15 mins in a day because he is prone to infections. I feel very helpless." - Meenakshi

Meenakshi's baby has a very low amount of oxygen in the blood and high blood pressure that affects the heart and lungs, he also had a large hole in his heart which can lead to heart failure at any moment. An open heart surgery is the only means to repair the defects in his heart without which he'll lose his life.

Jaganathan is a daily wage worker, he works on other's farm and earns around Rs 3,000 per month. They live hand to mouth and struggle even for basic needs.
