When local animal rescuers in Kerala reached out to us on August 19th, we knew we couldn’t just stand back and watch as thousands of animals were left to die. Although ResQ is a Pune-based organisation, we didn’t think twice about sending 3 vehicles (including one Large Animal Ambulance) on a 30-hour drive, packed with animal rescue manpower, food and water, and medical supplies enough to treat over 300+ animals. After making a few stops along the way to drop off supplies for local animal welfare groups, our 6-person team of animal rescuers (including 1 veterinarian) jumped right into the thick of things. Traveling by boat into Kerala’s most water-logged areas, the team has been providing food and medical assistance to stranded animals both large and small. There are hundreds of animals who are completely abandoned, injured or hungry since days and battling the cold. The RESQ team has been working round the clock rescuing dogs, cows, goats, chicken, birds and more from this state.
Just bringing the animals out of the water is simply not enough. The RESQ Team has been on ground, assessed the animal-related needs for the next 2-3 months, and established channels to effectively support the most crucial requirements there: the ability to rebuild the smaller shelters and animal care housing units and provide a local supply of food and medicine.
When it comes to disaster relief efforts, animals are frequently ignored. We have teamed up with local groups to ensure that the animals are supported for the months to come. The animals of Kerala desperately need you! With your support, we could create a fresh start for Kerala: one that is not only prepared for Mother Nature’s wrath, but also aims to foster human-animal coexistence in a once hostile urban ecosystem. Help us make this a reality by contributing today!
