We are a registered charitable trust in Agonda, South Goa, where animal welfare is still in its infancy with no veterinary clinic in the whole area.
Animal Shelter Agonda (ASA) is trying to change this by building a proper facility for animal care.
In this rural hinterland, income isn’t high and villagers tend to avoid distant trips to vets and only the more affluent can afford house visits, so we are a welcome break for the local animal population, as we offer free treatment to those whose owners can’t afford it.
Since January 2016, we are operating from temporary premises, providing medical care for all animals, successfully sterilizing and vaccinating dogs and cats against rabies and other diseases, feeding beach dogs through the monsoon season, when tourists are few and most restaurants shut down.
However, we are severely limited by the size of the present shelter. Everything from surgeries, treating in-and out-patients, to feeding and washing the laundry happens in just one room. And with just enough space for ten large and five small cages, we are usually overbooked. The location is also not ideal, as it is opposite a school on a main road, which can lead to accidents, and some neighbors are also not entirely happy with our presence.
The new site, where we are building a new shelter, is perfect: 5000 sq m in a secluded cashew orchard, away from traffic, where nobody will be disturbed by the barking of dogs. The building is being fully rebuilt to fit our purpose, with plenty of space for future expansion, namely sheds with pens to accommodate more animals.
At the moment, work on the facility has come to a stop as we have stretched our savings to the limit and require the little reserves we have left to run the existing little shelter and help the animals.
So we urgently need financial support for the following work that still needs to be done:
-Remaining exterior work 300,000
-Remaining interior plastering 80,000
-Flooring 190,000
-Plumbing & Tiling 330,000
-Electricals 150,000
INR 10,50,000
There are a lot of animals out there that need our help, but to save and rescue on a larger, more efficient scale, we need to be able to build the new premises. Please help us raise funds for building the shelter.
