2 month old Adithi, a beautiful baby girl was fine and the delight of her father. Imagine the anguish when she suddenly collapsed with cough and breathlessness and had to be urgently admitted.

The shock was further compounded when the baby could not sustain her breathing or blood pressure and had to be placed on a ventilator.

Suspecting a cardiac problem,  an echocardiogram was done and showed a heart that was hardly contracting or moving.

The pediatric cardiologist was called in and a diagnosis of a serious condition called ALCAPA (anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery was suspected).

Considering the serious grievous condition of the baby, Apollo Children's Hospital, Chennai was contacted and the baby was shifted for emergency surgery.

On arrival, the multifaceted team of surgeons, cardiologists, anaesthetists and intensivists swung into action. The baby was rapidly stabilised. The baby was shifted for a CT angiography. The diagnosis was confirmed.  ALCAPA is when the blood supply from the heart, instead of arising from the aorta (the main pipe carrying good blood with oxygen) comes from the pulmonary artery . This causes the little baby to suffer a massive heart attack.

The echo and CT ANGIOGRAPHY confirmed what the doctors dreaded to see-a totally damaged left ventricle with with even areas of calcium formation within the heart muscle indicating horrible damage.

The grief-stricken parents broke down in tears as the grave prognosis was explained and consented for surgery with much anguish.

The team swung into action that very evening and the surgery went through smoothly.

Considering the huge insult the heart had sustained before surgery and the damaged kidneys and liver, it was considered prudent to place the baby on ECMO -a life support system in which the heart and lungs are given rest while the circulation is supported by this artificial method.

The team, the hospital and most importantly, the baby are in for a long haul and a lot of materials and medications are going to be required to fight this awesome battle to save Adithi from the jaws of death.

Please help us fight.... With contributions big and small for Adithi!!!
