The child in the picture above is Baby Rakshath.
Rakshath’s mother was told during pregnancy that her child had a limb deformity.Rakshath’s father earned his livelihood by ironing clothes . Baby was born with club foot. Everybody in the hospital were saddened by seeing his legs. He was immediately referred to the Institute for Child Health where he underwent a corrective surgery within a week of his birth. Following the surgery Sukriti Social Foundation, a Chennai based cross disability organisation, gave him a foot abduction orthosis which he had to wear for 24 hours a day. Within 6 months his limbs became normal and he now has to wear these only in the night till the age of five.
Children outgrow in size very fast and require frequent replacement. So far Sukriti Social Foundation has changed his shoes four times and will continue to do so till the time he can completely do away with them.
Today Rakshath walks, plays and runs like all other children of his age.

There are 650 more children like Rakshath born with birth defects who need corrective orthopedic appliances like ankle foot orthosis, pelvic harness,foot drop splint to make them walk.run and play like all other children.
The need is urgent.
If children are not given these corrective appliances at the right time, they will be crippled for life. Once they cross this crucial period without proper care, no amount of treatment later will have any result. With life long crippling condition, they will not be able to go to school. As grown up adults -no education, so no job. No education, no job , no income , so families don't want them.

The Results
650 children in the age group of 45 days to 14 days would be supported with necessary corrective orthopedic apliances
Of these 650 children,
50 children would be cleared of the problem within 6 months
100 children would start walking within 18 months
300 children who had to wear the appliance for 24 hours would now wear them only in the night
200 children whose condition is more severe will start walking in about 2-3 years time.
