    Sharthika sri

    from Chennai, Tamil Nadu

Story

“Sharthika was an energetic child, who found joy in playing sports and participating in cultural events at school. As much as it pained us, we tried to keep her condition from her. We didn’t want her to worry or be upset. But at some point she figured it out and since that day, our once smiley and happy little girl just ceased to exist. She’s so meek and quiet now because she’s scared of what could happen…” - Rubini, mother

Her heart wasn’t functioning properly because of blocks in her valves

Sharthika was diagnosed with heart disease at the tender age of 9. After struggling with persistent symptoms like high fever, cough and cold for several weeks, it was discovered that the little girl’s heart was the cause of it. She had blocks in both her valves - one of them was entirely blocked, while the other only partially.

“She was very weak and sickly, and it worried us to no end that even medicines weren’t helping her. It was only when we consulted another doctor at a bigger clinic that we found out her heart is failing because of blocks in her valves.” - Senthil, father

She needed surgery or she would’ve risked heart failure

Initially, she was administered injections, hoping that the blocks could be rectified with just medicines. But even after over a year of treatment, there was no improvement in her condition. Instead, it had worsened.

Sharthika needed emergency valve replacement surgery, and a delay could have increased her chances of suffering a stroke or heart failure. In 2019, she successfully underwent the procedure for one valve that had been completely blocked.

Now her other valve is fully blocked, and she needs urgent surgery to live

The doctors assured them that the other valve wasn’t dysfunctional, and wouldn’t pose a threat to the 13-year-old for the time-being. Until a few months ago, when she started displaying the same symptoms that she did, when she was first diagnosed.

“All I feel is endless fear and dread. We’d completely exhausted all our resources for her previous procedure. We knew it was inevitable, and that the second surgery needed to happen in the near future. We just weren’t anticipating it to be this soon. We’re completely financially shattered and have no way of meeting the expenses for this surgery. We’re terrified that we might lose her because of our shortcomings…” - Senthil

They have no means of affording their daughter’s life-saving treatment

Senthil is a farmer, who earns a daily wage of just INR 350, and Rubini is a homemaker. Their income is barely sufficient to make ends meet, and they’ve already gone above and beyond their capacity so Sharthika could undergo her first surgery. Now, with nothing left, they’re in a difficult predicament.

“This condition has already snatched all our dreams and our happiness away. We can’t let it destroy our daughter’s life any further. We need her here with us. Please help us save our Sharthika!” - Senthil
