Mr Shah, 78 years, is extremely jovial and outgoing. He is warm and loving. He has adopted a routine doing certain things every day to kill his slow-moving time. To him, this city which is full of people, amazing houses and so many things happening around is not something he is happy about. He mentioned that his partner passed away 25 years ago and all his kids have settled down with their families abroad. He shared “I am proud that I was able to make a living when we had nothing and today I have reached to this level. But eating my meals alone every day in this big house, I sometimes wonder what I am going to do in the coming years.

Help Age India shows that over 10% of India’s 100 million elderly suffer from depression and 53 % of elderly face neglect.

And according to the study done by Agewell Foundation, 1 in every 2 senior citizens is suffering from loneliness.

The problem which we are trying to solve:

“Senior citizens from urban and semi-urban areas struggling with loneliness because of decreased participation and limited interaction in family and society.”

The rising number of senior citizens and the changing trend of families moving from a joint to a nuclear family set up are leaving them in a lurch. The demanding lifestyles of today’s work culture, lack of space for engagement and the digital revolution has resulted in decreased participation and interaction, making the elderly more prone to psychological, emotional, and social insecurities.

The Happiness Project  for Elderly:
Every age is enjoyable if one has a few good friends, a passion and a sense of purpose. We have seen that often when people reach a certain age they take a backseat and stop living life fully. With our first program “The Grey Shades Fellowship”, we plan to sow the seeds for a 100-day program, where we want to make senior citizens live their silver years with enthusiasm and purpose.

They will experience various sessions programmed to help them through reflection, expression and exploration along with fun and recreational activities. The exposure to the new learning’s in a positive and happy space will help them to interact socially, build a support network, boost their self-esteem and lead an active life.

The fellowship program will be implemented in Chandigarh-Tricity.

Hello, my name is Wyonna and I am from Mumbai.  My motivation to work in the development sector came from my two-year voluntary experience with AIESEC and my experience with changemakers at TEDxGateway.  I completed my  Bachelor of Commerce but soon quit my job to pursue my passion for solving complex social problems. I've recently completed my post-graduation in Development Leadership from The Indian School of Development Management.

"My grandad continued Skyping me even when he was 94 years! With his never-ending zeal for learning and exploration, I realised how important it is to empower our seniors in order to enable them to live an enriched life and encourage active ageing. An important part of our society is our senior citizens. But to be honest, we haven’t done well in this sector. As much as we claim to respect our older generations, our senior citizens in many instances lead sad and troubled lives."

Hello, my name is Inderpreet and I am from Amritsar. I have done my graduation from Guru Nanak Dev University in Social Science and got training in Development Leadership and Management from Indian School of Development Management. I have been selected as Young Changemaker fellow at Ashoka Foundation and fellow at School for Social Entrepreneurs India. “In my immediate environment, I have witnessed elders being constant victims of neglect and abandonment. Since my early childhood, I had been taught to treat my elders with love & care. However, with the way the elders around me were actually treated, I decided to explore the dismal situation further. In the process, I started SPEEE in 2016. Today, I continue to work for the betterment of elderly.”

About the Organization:
Grey Shades is a youth organization working for the social and emotional well-being of senior citizens. It started with a mission to re-establish the social and epistemic value of the elderly in our society.

Grey Shades has come a long way from a small project, SPEEE (Society for Productive Engagement and Entertainment for elderly) which was started in 2016 where we worked to help senior citizens of old age homes to stay productive and meaningfully engaged. We have grown past infancy from a good three years of research and experience working in Amritsar, New Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon and Chandigarh to understand the issues and identify the solutions for age-related problems in our country, India.

Grey Shades is a Not for Profit organisation registered as a Charitable Trust and as a family, it consists of a team of two people working full time, a large number of people believing in this cause and a lovely community of Elders.
