    This fundraiser will benefit

    Sivaraman N/A

    from Chennai, Tamil Nadu

Sivaraman, affectionately known as Shivu, is a gentle soul.  A father of two children, a girl in 12th standard, and a boy in 3rd Standard, he is an ideal father and a loving, caring husband.

On 19th November 2016, as usual, he dropped his son at a class and was returning on his bike when a novice driver in a car hit him. Despite wearing a helmet, Shivu sustained severe head injuries .

Since then, he has been in the ICU at Apollo Chennai in a coma.  While his vitals are steady, his brain function continues to remain poor.

He has had multiple operations so far, and thanks to the competency of the team of highly qualified Doctors looking after him, he is being weaned off the ventilator.

The family, based on the recommendations of the Doctors, plans to move him out of the ICU and eventually back home. This will reduce costs significantly, though a sufficiently equipped room with 24x7 nursing will still remain a fairly expensive proposition.

Your help to Shivu and his family at this time will go a long way in helping us provide the greatest chance for Shivu to recover and resume as normal a life as possible.

How the money will be utilized
There are two components to expenses - the one-time hospital bills and the regular monthly expenses once Shivu is moved back home.  Given below are guesstimates at this point in time.  I will refine them further as more details are available.

The Hospital bills
The insurance cover that Shivu had has been exhausted.  By the time Shivu gets discharged from the hospital, the unpaid amount is expected to be about Rs. 20,00,000 (Twenty Lakhs).

Before moving him home, we would like to move him to a regular room in a hospital, with the minimum equipment he would require, to understand the needs of the setup at home as well as to ensure a smooth transition from an ICU environment to the home.  This would be for a week to ten days, and may cost another Rs. 3,00,000 (three lakhs).

Home care
Finally, home care would require some basic equipment such as a hospital bed, a BIPAP, phlegm suction apparatus, an oxygen concentrator, a nebulizer, etc., apart from tracheostomy trained nurses to be present round-the-clock.  The equipment is likely to cost between 1 and 2 lakhs.

The nurses would cost about Rs. 50,000 - Rs. 75,000 per month.  Doctors' visits, medication, and consumables are likely to cost another Rs. 50,000 a month. So the monthly cost is likely to be between 1 - 1.25 Lakhs.
