Story

Hello! Here is an opportunity to send a girl to pursue her dreams abroad.

My name is Golden Singh. I was born in Aurangabad, Bihar and brought up in Jalgaon, Maharashtra. Growing up in a middle-income background, I have still made my way into receiving two exemplary offers, one from International School of Social Studies, Hague and School of Oriental and African Studies, London.

Folks, my name is Golden and I am completing my M.A. in International Relations at Jawaharlal Nehru University and want to pull up my academic endeavor by choosing either of the institutes to sharpen my skills and deepen my interest. My life has been very engaging with many ups and downs. I started my higher education by doing a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce from North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon. After that I had a brief stint in Maniar Polyfab, a job I did with the intention to fund my future education; I landed in JNU to do an MA in International Relations and Area Studies. While doing my MA, I realized that I need more interdisciplinary coursework to give a good shape to my research interest. The MA Development Studies program at ISS at Hague, Netherlands does actually cater to my academic need for my future endeavors.

Although how ambitious and beneficial my future endeavors are, I sadly cannot garner robust funding for them. I sadly cannot afford the fees. My education journey has been splendid, even though I have struggled to achieve that. I was born in a village in Bihar and grew up in a small town of Maharashtra, where very few women from marginalized communities get to higher education due to deprivations and lack of accessibility. As a first-generation Bahujan woman graduate from a middle-class family, education was a privilege for me. It has been instrumental in giving me upward mobility, even though I come from a ‘lower caste’ background in Indian society. I desire further mobility by signing up for the program in Hague, which can all happen with your help. I thank the Constitution of India which guarantees me free basic education, because of which I stand before you all. Thanks to the availability of public education, I could rise from a scared small-town girl from a rural part of India to a confident girl in India’s one of the most prestigious universities. I recently got myself educated in India's finest social science institute, the Jawaharlal Nehru University, which selects students after one of the most competitive entrance examinations. Even in the obstinate pandemic period, where I involved myself in various pandemic-related social-service activities, I accomplished to excel in the class by earnestly completing my coursework. As one who dives into the writings of Foucault-Ambedkar and works with the masses, at the same time, I deserve to be on the list of those who deserve th This girl will reach up to her desires and dreams, if you help her to do this robust master’s program.

The program, MA Development Studies: (Social Justice Perspective) brings different streams of social sciences to study issues related to developing countries together. I particularly want to research the leadership of women leaders from backward castes and marginalized groups in politics. Very limited literature is available to Shudra women, thus I want to critically engage with their role in political leadership. As, mainstream popular culture has portrayed them not only submissive but also as passive bodies that can be destroyed or raped. But there are numerous legendary icons such as Savitribai Phule, Phoolan Devi, Rabri Devi, Bhanwari Devi, who fought against the systematic caste and patriarchal oppression that left a huge legacy for the coming generations. This research would enable me to understand the socio-economic factors in India that create this gap of accessibility among women from different social groups and the role that state institutions can play in addressing this gap at the policy level. Given my commitment to women’s issues, I would like to start this process from my district of Jalgaon and gradually reach out to other parts of the country. Eventually, the empowered women will play an important role in building up country's better future and I would like to be a part of it by utilizing the knowledge and skills received from my studies.

I need at least 17,00,000 for the tuition fees to secure my seat, for the living expenses I am exploring other options such as Loan, or I would do a job in the Netherlands. So, friends, your precious help intends to come back to you in the form of a well-corroborated research contribution. As a researcher, I would consider your help as an investment. I once again request you to contribute as much as possible and help me reach my dreams!!!

Thank you :)
In love and hope,
Golden.
