Golchehera Bewa is a 60-year-old from a small village near Kolkata. She has brain tumour and needs surgery to live. Her son Kalu Shah is the only breadwinner in a family of 6. His father passed away 16 years back and as the eldest he made sure that all his siblings went to school.

He does not have the funds to get his mother the life-saving surgery she needs and he needs help saving his mother.

Kalu is Golchehera's only support in the last 15 years

Even in the most difficult of times, Golchehera doesn't let worry bog her down. She just does what she needs to do. When her husband succumbed from appendicitis, her eldest son Kalu was only 12. Golchehera was left with five younger children and no means of taking care of them. But she never gave up hope – and remained strong for her children.

Kalu, the eldest took on the responsibility of helping his mother deal with their changed circumstances. He quit his studies and began working in nearby farms to bring home some money. His uncle helped making sure Golchehera and the children had enough to eat.

“Only in the last few years, we became self-reliant because my brother also started working in the fields. With my mother's illness we are back to taking charity from our relatives. Maybe once mother is better we can do something for them too,” Kalu says.

With their help, Kalu and Golchehera managed to keep the rest of the children in school making sure they all finished their basic schooling at least. But his extended family – that has been very supportive this far cannot raise the amount of Rs 1.6 lakhs needed for the surgery.

Kalu needs help saving his mother

Early this year, Golchehera complained of headache and eye-pain. A common enough ailment, but her family was very concerned when her headache made her nauseaous and dizzy. The family found out that she had a brain tumour – the family decided to bring her to Bangalore for treatment.

With her characteristic optimism, Golchehera believes that with the surgery, she will get better. Despite managing to make only about Rs 5,000 per month, Kalu spent over 1.4 lakhs on his mother's treatment. He has now exhausted all his savings and faces the task of telling his mother that there is no money left for the surgery she needs.

Wanting to take care of his mother like she cared for them, now her children want help saving Golchehera. Help Kalu save his rock, his anchor and his strength. Contribute to Golchehera's brain surgery now.
