Help the Stone Sculptors of Madurai

I’m Sarayu Menon, a Criminal Justice Fellow from Tata Institute of Social Sciences(TISS, Mumbai) fellowship programme under the Centre of Criminology and Justice.

As part of my fellowship, I’m working with a denotified marginalised community in a place called Bethaniyapuram, Madurai. They belong to the Hindu Koravar community, and are group of over 50 families, traditionally nomadic and partaking in stone sculpting as a community occupation. They now engage in daily wage labour such as selling mats(paayi), repairing gas stoves, riding autos, manual labour etc. I have been working with this community in Madurai for a year and a half, assisting them to get their identity documents(ration card, voter id, Aadhar etc) made, connecting them to government schemes that are applicable, conducting English classes for the children, medical camps and other activities to facilitate awareness and empowerment.

I’m looking to raising about Rs. 20000, to organize events in the community- starting with a cultural event for Republic Day, an educational/recreational day trip for the children and youth of the community, organizing workshops on health, violence, entrepreneurship, money management etc

For the Republic Day event, we plan to have a few activities after the flag hoisting like songs, essay writing and recitation, we’ve invited a local traditional music collective to perform, an art workshop would be held, musical chair and a kabbadi match

Please come forward to help this community grow. Any contribution will help them.
