The mother and her teenage son (10 years) and daughter (14 years) came to Kolkata from a remote village of Sundarban to sell incense stick. They sleep in a roadside tea stall in Jadavpur, Kolkata after the tea vendor closes his shop at night . At morning 4 am they have to vacate the place because the tea vendor will start selling tea. The husband is an alcoholic , beat the mother and has thrown out them from their hut at Sundarban. So they can't go back to Sundarban in the fear of their abusive father . The street side shop is their only shelter at night. Rest of the day they sell incense stick in the roadside .
The sister and brother was selling incense stick in front of my office gate . They didn't beg , they were trying to earn by selling . Their mother was sitting beside the footpath
I have provided them Twenty Thousands Rupees to build a home for them at Sundarban. When I started talking to them the girl asked me who am I , why I need their picture etc. She wanted to make sure that I don't have any evil purpose . To convince them I told them I try to help people in need and showed them the houses we have built for some homeless people. The girl told me "Dada , we don't have a home , we cant to to the father's home because he beats my mother and breaks his leg ". She further added that they have a small piece of land where she wants to make a small hut where three of them can stay.
The 14 years old girl explained me their situation. She told me how her father beats her mother .
She wanted to build the house little higher from ground level so that during flood their home remains dry .
I wanted to wait few more days before helping them . But she told me they will return home on Saturday and again comeback after many days. I was afraid that they will lose connection with me . They may not find me again . And I looked at the girls eyes , I could feel that pain they are going through everyday. So I decided to withdraw 20,000 rupees from nearby ATM and give it to them so that they can build a bamboo based home with Asbestos roof. .
