Raising Boys To Be Gender Equitable

Story

Incidents of violence and discrimination perpetrated by boys and men against women, children and other men are at an alarming high rate. There are 230 million men under the age of 18, who are growing up in a culture that has normalised gender-based violence and discrimination.

This has to change if we want to see our country to be safe for all to live in.

Equal Community Foundation has developed a unique approach for combating gender-based violence and discrimination. We raise gender equitable boys to prevent the problem from happening in the first place.

Through specially designed curriculum and an engagement model, we work with boys in the age group of 13 to 17 years over a period of one year. We equip them with knowledge, skills, peer support and leadership abilities to change their own behaviour and then bring about change in their families and communities. We also support organisations across India in embedding the approach of raising gender equitable boys into their existing work.

Till date, we have worked with 9684 boys across two states - Maharashtra and West Bengal and supported 12 organisations. Being able to identify different forms of gender-based violence and discrimination, stopping child marriage, not participating in street sexual harassment and creating awareness about domestic violence are just some of the changes the participants of our programme demonstrate.

We need your support to reach thousands of boys across the country. Your donation will contribute towards our direct work with boys and organisations. Support us and contribute towards our mission of raising every boy in India to be gender equitable.
