Why am I fundraising?
GEMS school is situated in a remote location in the foothills of the Himalayas. It serves children from the nearby villages. Power lines frequently get cut off due to strong winds, landslides and rainstorms. Even otherwise the power supply is intermittent. So to ensure day to day functioning an alternate source of power supply is necessary. Currently the school uses a diesel generator which costs more than Rs 400 per hour to run fans and lights in around 15 classrooms housing more than 200 children.
The school is just 6 years old but is growing fast. It currently runs classes till 9th Std. All its students and teachers hail from nearby villages. Volunteers from many countries have volunteered to train its village teachers and even have stayed back for a year as a teacher in the school. The school also runs a teacher exchange programme in partnership with a UK primary school. I have had the pleasure of knowing the school’s founders since I volunteered in the school last year. These 2 amazing people have been managing the school for the past 6 years overcoming innumerable challenges. Imagine the state of a child in the school's computer lab fearing all his work could dissapear in a power cut in an instant or witnessing a child faint in the heat. Yes, the school has been functioning for this long facing such challenges each and every day. By helping them get reliable power supply through solar panels, these challenges can be made that much easier for decades to come.
What do I plan to do with the funds?
The upfront cost of such an installation is estimated to be around 16 Lakhs. So for this campaign to appeal to a wider audience I have taken the aid of Prerna and her team from Big Klick Films in order to create a short video about the campaign. Prerna and her business partner Kevin run their own non-profit film school Big Klick Media School to help those living in limited means, dreaming of a future in films and photography. They do commercial projects in weekdays and work with slum children in the weekends. So they are deeply invested in the cause and would help me create a video that not only appeals possible donors but is also sensitive to the plight of the children studying in the school.The video that we hope to create would be put up in our crowdfunding page and even used to get initial sponsorships for the project. It would take us 5 days to shoot the video. Prerna and another representative from her firm Big Klick Films will be doing this project with me.
