Help Us! Provide FireFighting Equipment & Training in Uttarakhand

Harela Society is a Non- Profit Organization that works in the majestic valley of Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand,India. We have been working on various issues related to the environment, education and sustainable livelihood options in villages and cities of Uttarakhand since 2012.

Why are we crowdfunding?
We are crowdfunding primarily to purchase firefighting equipment and provide firefighting training to the villagers of Pithoragarh district in Uttarakhand.

Although forest fires are not a new phenomenon in Uttarakhand, but because this year is an el-nino year, conditions have been comparatively dry, resulting in uncontrollable forest fires.

For many years, the locals have been known to be responsible for these forest fires, for better fodder harvest, a scientifically wrong practice. Others responsible include the mismanagement of forest specially Pine forest by authorities, and the timber mafia who encourage locals to set fire for illegal timber supply.

This year, due to very less rain, and short winter, these forest fires have increased many fold.
This has also resulted in accidents and deaths of many, including firefighters, due to lack of forest firefighting equipment and techniques.

Here in Pithoragarh district, Uttarakhand, our volunteers have not only done firefighting, but also village outreach programmes, where we educate villagers on forest fires. We are trying to form active groups in affected villages.

We will be conducting workshops on firefighting under international experts, and introduce them to proper equipment.

Support us in taking these actions,so that we can be prepared and prevent forest fires in our region in the future.

How will we use the funds ?

  • Purchase of Forest firefighting equipment and training - In our recent experience of forest firefighting in Pithoragarh, we found that the forest department and our team seriously lacked some basic equipment such as masks, oxygen cylinders, walkie-talkies, GPS, fire extinguishing equipment (chemical balls),fire suits, fire blankets, gels (to treat burns) etc.
  • Training forest department ground staff and volunteers of organizations - This training will be provided by experts of International and national organizations.  Post the training, trainees will be provided with a set of equipment. Presently, this training will begin for one district, Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand.
