A trek to Annapurna to raise funds to empower traditional artisans of Gujarat

I, Mriganka Pattnaik, a graduate from IIT Guwahati, am looking to raise awareness (and funds!) to promote women empowerment. . An adventure enthusiast, I wanted to make my trek more meaningful by pledging it to raise funds for a cause via Milaap. I feel that the trek, and the surrounding publicity will generate a buzz that can be leveraged using Milaap to raise awareness towards issues plaguing rural women of India, and also that people can have a significant impact in raising funds by providing a loan as low as Rs 500 through Milaap. I'll be going for the trek from June 30 - July 13, 2014 but my fundraiser will be up till August 15, 2014. Join me on my journey by following my travel-blog.
Chandrikaben comes from a family which has practiced Mashru-cotton crafts for generations in the Pattan district of Gujarat. However, changing economic times led Chandrikaben, like many others to abandon this craft. Milaap, through its field partner Gramshree, is providing many women like Chandrikaben with a complete ecosystem to revive such traditional crafts - training, raw materials, new-age designs, and critical marketing support. Today, Chandrikaben spins the magic once again and makes fabrics come alive in a dazzle of colors. In the last 6 years, under Gramshree's careful guidance she has not only contributed to the revival, she is now gearing up to establish her own micro-enterprise.
Your loans will help women artisans purchase raw yarn and additional equipment to increase their production. There are a few upcoming exhibitions which seek to showcase these age-old crafts and fabric weaving techniques. The loans will also help partly cover costs of transportation and marketing in the exhibitions.
Every drop of water makes the mighty ocean. I strongly believe that this platform equips the masses to make a significant impact in shaping the environment we live in. Enough has been said about the deep-rooted problems facing women in India. The words ‘women-empowerment’ have been thrown around long enough to sound clichéd. It is now time to take action. For a brighter tomorrow, let’s change the world, one life at a time!
