I am fundraising to build the attitude to win among students from low-income communities

Dear Reader, Thank you for reading this. Roopali is a 10th standard student studying in government school in Pandharpur. She comes from a low income family. Her parents work as daily wage labourers at various construction sites. She lives in a community which is full of social issues like child marriage, domestic violence, and tobacco and alcohol addiction among men as well as teenage boys, all of which sometimes results in gender violence. She knows all of this and to fight such things she wants to join the state police service along with her friends. She knows the reality of her surroundings but a 10th standard student like her aspiring for civil service doesn’t even know what a prime minister is? She even doesn’t know what needs to be done for that and has no one to support her, motivate her and give a proper direction to her career. I will be working with the likes of Roopali who have the desire and potential to do something but don’t know the way forward. This will be achieved through a series of steps. First step will be to motivate the students by showing them the possibilities and the ways to achieve their dreams. This will include showing them videos of some rags to riches stories, interactions with local people who are successful in their life, and career guidance sessions by renowned personalities from the surrounding areas. Next step will be to work on their academics. Make them confident about English, Mathematics and make science easier for them by demonstrations of Toys from trash by Arvind Gupta. As most of these children come from low income families, their earnings are on a day to day basis and financing the education of their children is a tough task for them. So I will be providing them with some training on livelihood or skill development activity. This will enable them to utilize their time for some productive activity and they will be able to produce some products and sell them in the market for some price. This activity will be called Earn and Learn. It will inculcate the attitude of self financing their education. Also it will emphasize the importance of work. To foster this importance of work in a much better way, these students will be taken to the Annual summer camp at Somnath called the “ Shram Sanskar Chavani” which was started by Baba Amte. And finally they will be linked to some mentors. These mentors will be the people who were born and brought up in the same town and are now successful in their lives. These mentors will give direction to the careers and lives of these students. With gratitude Shailesh About Shailesh: http://in.linkedin.com/pub/shailesh-shinde/16/b21/92
