The people of Nanded district in Marathwada, Maharashtra have lived in drought for the last past 3 years. Food, fodder and water conditions have only been worsening. The Indian Express has published an article calling Marathwada the new suicide capital.

The people of this region have coped. Dry-land agriculture was adopted by the farming community. But the long, dry spells left the farms unproductive in the area. A hardy, hopeful people, the farmer took loans every year hoping to make money on the harvest that never happened. Now they are steeped in debt, with no relief in sight.

Rearing livestock provides an important source of alternative income to farmers and helps them tide over a bad drought. Continuous drought badly affects fodder availability. The rate of dry fodder touches its high.  Either to sell out or give up their live stock is the only way to save their animals against famine starvation.

There are no fodder camps, fodder banks in the region, Government programs like fodder development program have failed to yield result due to water scarcity. Farmers’ fodder stock is near about to finish.  The farmers are in no position to shell out money for fodder purchase.

For this situation, 'Hydroponics’ offers a ray of hope. With this innovative approach, we can produce green and nutritious fodder at home, in a small space, in very less time, with less water without soil in fewer efforts. Farmers can save 40-50% cost on fodder. One tray of 2kg maize seed can produce 10-12kg of green fodder in just 7 days.

In this context, the Sanskriti Samvardhan Mandal (SSM) has been training farmers in Marathwada practise sustainable agriculture development through the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) - the Agriculture Science Center in Nanded district.

Happy with the results, we have had to hold training workshops back-to-back to ensure the farmers really understand and can independently utilise this technique.

The major expense in hydroponics is the plastic trays. One tray costs Rs. 500 and each farmer needs at least four trays, meaning Rs. 2,000 per farmer. If we support them with the trays, they can make other arrangements easily and save their animals from starvation. This can help the community overcome their dire situation.

We request you to lend a kind hand to save the livestock in the drought situation. Your small support of Rs. 2000/- can make a big difference. Come, Donate now!
