Pledging our TCS10K Marathon to support people with disability. Come and join our cause!

Why am I fundraising?

Kishore has been associated with Enable India since 2012 in his capacity as a filmmaker and since then has made many videos for Enable India. During his association, he has developed a strong sense of awareness towards persons with disabilities. He has been influenced by the amazing work that Enable India is doing towards providing dignity to persons with disability.

Pooja has also been associated with Enable India since 2012 in different capacities. She has recently started working with Enable India. She has been greatly impacted by Enable India's work in the area of changing mindsets of people about disability.

What do I plan to do with the funds?

We plan to donate the money to Enable India. Watch this video to know more about Enable India's work - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTIWgrR-N5A.

“The only disability in life is a bad attitude” – Scott Hamilton

I never fully understood the significance of the above line until the last few weeks. I have covered many interesting campaigns over the past few weeks as a Milaap fellow but the most inspiring ones have been the campaigns focusing on the special needs community.

The first and most important tool when working with students in the special needs community is empowerment. It involves identifying ability in a differently-abled person and building a career around it. Here I feel the work done by Enable India is quite extraordinary.  Cerebral Palsy, speech impairment, mobility issues, Tetraplegia, Quadriplegia etc,  just the number of disabilities that Enable India has helped truly to its name “Enable” is awe-inspiring. Every single condition has a solution. This solution not only brings confidence to the students but also empowers them towards a sustained career. Experts always look for an ability in the students to create a career. Job roles vary from project coordinators to project assistants to work in data entry. Companies are now working with enable India to hire students. Some corporates even outsource a part of their manual tasks to the students at Enable India. Now they have expanded their horizons with partners outside Bangalore with whom they co-ordinate and conduct training through Google hangouts for their external students.

What sets them apart is the number of thoughtful initiatives that they have setup. They conduct sensitization programs for the co-workers and the senior management of the companies that their students work in.  This helps in improving their daily interactions with the differently abled employees in the office.

Trying to comprehend the impact of Enable India purely with numbers would be an understatement to the impact they have created. It is a lot more abstract than just quantitative impact. However, I will try my best to paint this picture with numbers. For every Rs. 1 of inflow into Enable India, Rs. 6.5 of economic impact is created. This one statistic for me completely explains the value of Enable India in our ecosystem. The trickledown effect not only creates a multiplicative economic impact but also changes the lives of many in the differently-abled community by building them a career.
