India's 'Glass Woman' wants to save many others fighting rare diseases

29-year-old Dhanya Ravi compassionately known as Indian’s glass women suffers from osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), commonly known as brittle bone disease, a rare genetic disorder that is present from birth. Instead of letting the disease break her spirit, Dhanya remained positive about life. Presently she is a freelance content writer and social evangelist.

At the age of 19, she had read about a teenage boy, who suffered from the same disease and needed an operation on his leg, Dhanya took action and raised the funds he needed for his surgery along with her networking friends. Since then she has been vigorous in empowering people with disability and spread awareness of rare diseases individually and in collaboration with NGO projects.

Her voices of spreading awareness and supporting the community have been heard much by participating in reality TV shows, celebrity quizzes in India and motivational talks.

For her efforts, Dhanya was conferred the National Award 2018 in the Role Model category by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities India, and was also honored with the ‘Brave Bangle Award 2012’ and ‘Annual Inspired Indian Foundation (IIF) Award 2014’ for devoting her heart and soul towards alleviating the pain of people with disability.
Dhanya has suffered and overcome so much in her life, now she wants to help others fighting similar diseases.

Dear donors,

Few months back I started up this campaign to support two friends of mine who have rare diseases with one lakh each. With utmost joy together we could support Pranuv to buy one of his therapy equipment. The other beneficiary I personally wanted to support through each one of your kindness is for an infant girl to buy her medicine who has Phenylketonuria.

Unfortunately, one of the medicines she wants cannot be imported hence, we are supporting her with her everyday diet with the raised fund.

It is often said and experienced Medical treatments are expensive. Sometimes for people with rare diseases either we do not have medicine or cannot be reached because of various reasons.

I believe it is through giving we grow and experience life beyond our comfort zones. The current times are that sometimes the sufferer itself forgets humanity!

I thank those few real gem souls who trusted me and showed your kind gesture to support my community friends.

These are the medical reports.

Thanks

Dear Supporters,

It is often hard for us to judge who needs our support.
In most cases when we are confronted with a challenge we look for that safe option that we can rely on. In the social space that I engage, I have noticed that when it comes to offering the support we immediately think of some NGO or someone from a vulnerable background. While that is a wonderful gesture, often the ones who are from a seemingly better background fail to get our attention and remain devoid of the support they deserve. This is what made me consciously choose to support a friend, whose needs can easily go unnoticed.

While I wholeheartedly thank everyone who is supporting me in the mission of raising 2 lakhs for two deserving friends. Was able to contribute 1 lakh to one of them. please share the Milaap http://bit.ly/2ZNpVyr and help me raise the required fund to support another buddy…

I would also like to request you to keep an eye for the people around you who might be silently struggling. We all need support at various stages despite our backgrounds. If we slow down to pay attention, we may notice many dear ones who we might not have thought as needing support, silently struggling around us.

Thank you once again to those who trusted my journey and I look forward to your continued support.

Regards,
Dhanya Ravi
