1. Brief description of the emergency and impact:

The Cyclone “Gaja” which hit on 15th November 2018 in the coastal districts of Thanjavur, Nagappattinam, Thiruvarur & Pudukkottai, Tamilnadu, India has created historic devastation on the lives of poor, dalit and marginal farmers. 100000 of people have rendered homeless and they are now on the streets, over 500000 coconut trees have been uprooted by cyclone, 45 people dead. Some 2,51,674 people have been displaced and are homeless and are dwelling in school, community hall.

The cyclone damaged 117000 houses uprooted at least 107000 affected more than 88,000 hectares of agricultural land in six districts, under crops (rice, coconut tree, plantain, fruit trees, timber value trees) have been washed away together with livestock such as cows,goats and chickens. Household belongings such as food, clothing and kitchen utensils have also been washed away. The displaced population have no food, shelter, sanitary materials, clothing, blankets and kitchen utensils.

2. Why is Deepam Trust response needed?:


Deepam Trust response is needed as the affected populations have no food, shelter, clothing, sanitary materials and kitchen utensils. The government is requesting stakeholders and humanitarian agencies for more support to the displaced and affected population.

Deepam Trust have direct experience of suffering people we have collected food grains, cash and other eatable from the people of other areas and distributed the same to the suffering people. Our help was only touched tip of the ice bug and we have to supply for livelihood arrangement for those who have lost their cattle, boats, plantations, help to rebuild their destroyed houses and address immediate food and medical camp, Sanitation and Hygiene facilities (WASH).

3. Planned activities
We plan to support financially to rebuild their livelihood and bring them back to normal life. Our low estimate for the relief and rehabilitation for one family is INR.100000 ($ 1400) and we plan to support 50 families in  of Thalaignayiru, Vedharanyam and Keevalur blocks area where 500 of people are on the roads. Therefore kindly arrange relief and rehabilitation measuring in Vedharanyam Taluk area.
We request to contribute your generosity to a fifty families at least.
