    Danamma

    from Bangalore, Karnataka

Danamma underwent her first surgery exactly a month before her 10th standard boards. After struggling with excruciating back pain for 6 months, the Doctors in Bijapur finally had an explanation and cure for it. A full body scan revealed a cyst in her spinal cord, giving her months of sleepless nights during her crucial year of boards.
But Danamma appeared for the exams in March and scored 76% in her boards. “My father is a farmer. We own a small piece of land in Devar Hipparagi, a small village in Bijapur. Earnings are barely enough to cover the living expenses let alone our school bills. There was no way I could afford to skip exams.”
She continued to make the best of what she had and studied harder in the coming years.
In 2011, Danamma got a government seat for Bachelors in Ayurvedic Medicine in Gadag, a town in Karnataka. For this farmer’s family, it was a hope for a better future. A future where the kids of house don't turn to becoming a daily wage labourers for lack of funds for education.

But little did the family know, that the coming years will steer her life into some unexpected struggles. The back pains returned again. This time much stronger, spreading to her left leg.

Doctors were consulted and scans were done again; and Danamma worst fears came true. The cysts had reappeared and she needed surgery. This is the fourth time in last  5 years she was underwent a spine surgery. And the risks were becoming graver. The surgery removed the cysts. But it left Danamma paralyzed. She lost complete mobility of her left leg.
