As the second wave of COVID-19 ravages India, the demand for medical infrastructure and oxygen is under dire stress. This calls for immediate collective action to mobilize the creation of alternative health and recovery centres and additional sources of oxygen apart from reliance on oxygen cylinders. A coalition of partners – Anant National University, Sustain Labs, Parliamentarians with Innovators for India, Habitat for Humanity - have come together and are playing a crucial role in setting up these alternative COVID-19 recovery centres in different states across the country.

Since May 2020, our coalition of partners have made 13 COVID-19 recovery centres across 5 states in India. We have also designed, manufactured, and put on the road in 2 states COVID-19 oxygen response auto rickshaws and COVID-19 testing auto rickshaws.

We are now partnering with the Government of Punjab to set up recovery centres in the State of Punjab with facility of oxygen concentrators to mitigate the reliance on oxygen cylinders and supply. Our initiative in Punjab is spearheaded by Ashish Kumar – Advocate, Supreme Court of India, and supported by Saath Livelihood Services.

What are we doing?
We are setting up a COVID-19 recovery centre in Punjab within the physical infrastructure provided by the State Government. The recovery centre will be equipped with cost-effective furniture made from corrugated boards which have a lamination film making it water resistant and easy to disinfect. This furniture includes beds, bedside tables and separators, besides essential medical equipment. The most important aspect of this project in Punjab is that the recovery centres will have 1 oxygen concentrator with each bed which will substantially reduce the demand and wait for oxygen cylinders and the infrastructure required for filling the same. The centre will help healthcare workers provide necessary medical support to mild and moderate cases of COVID-19 patients. The centre can even be transported to different locations and rural areas should the need arise.

Once the centre setup has been established, it will be handed over to the local government body to manage.

What are the costs?
The recovery centre setup consists of furniture, medical equipment and most importantly oxygen concentrators. Currently for a 60 bed COVID-19 recovery centre project in Punjab  the total cost is 75,00,000 INR. This includes the cost for material, manufacturing, transportation and assembly of furniture on site. The rates of procurement are on the basis of bulk orders placed with our suppliers.

How can you help?
Your help and participation in the form of contribution to this campaign and spreading the word will help us achieve our goal in quickly setting up the COVID-19 recovery centre in Punjab and providing oxygen concentrators to ensure that no one suffers because of lack of oxygen. Since we are partnering with local governments, our projects ensure that your contribution is correctly, fully and effectively utilized where it matters.
