The second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in India left marginalised groups vulnerable to medical, financial, and social adversities. Menstruators constitute 30 percent of India’s population and only 36 percent of this population has access to disposable sanitary pads. 97 percent of the menstruating population in rural India still uses old clothes for pads,

I, Farheen Naaz, founder of Delhi-based not-for-profit organisation WeTheChange, work towards creating awareness and knowledge about menstrual health among menstruators, and open conversations with the male population. The objective of the organization is to break taboos that surround menstruation. We aim to normalize period talk among not only adolescent girls, but among families of the girls as well. By including men and boys in the family, we aim to create a comfortable and safe space for menstruators.

Unfortunately, many women still use cotton rags, ash, and other unsanitary options during their periods. We work extensively in rural areas around Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab as well as in urban slums. At the peak of both COVID-19 waves that hit the country, we were working on the ground with our partners at Purani Dilli Walon Ki Baatein, a leading non-profit organisation to distribute ration kits. We conducted a ration distribution drive at SPID, Uttam Nagar for a community of transgenders and sex workers.

The sanitary hygiene kit contains -
50 high-quality sanitary pads
50 disposal bags (for used sanitary pad)
2 new undergarments
1 bar of soap
2 cotton, reusable face masks

Each kit costs Rs. 500/- and suffice for 6 months of menstrual support. We intend to distribute 1000 kits through this campaign.

So far we have been able to procure 500 packets of sanitary pads but we need donations for more packets to sustain a regular supply to the women from communities like Adivasis, SC, ST, Transgenders, Sex Workers, LGBTQIA+, and other vulnerable sections. We need your generous support in our endeavor to do so. You can either donate sanitary napkins or contribute in cash so that we are able to help more girls and women from socially and economically backward sections of society. 

Currently, we are working on distributing ration kits to families in urban slums in and around Delhi NCR. Each ration kit would also include Sanitary & Hygiene Kits. Objective:

It intends to reach out to menstruators from marginalised communities to support them with basic menstrual hygiene kits.  

All expenditures and lists of beneficiaries will be posted transparently.

We are maintaining the record of each beneficiary with all the necessary details, to ensure that the help reaches the right person.

We get a declaration form signed by the beneficiary along with their AADHAR card details, to avoid duplicity.

All the financial management and transparency are supervised by Delhi Youth Welfare Association (DYWA), established in 1990 in Old Delhi. The team scrutinizes all the hindrances that were accountable for the low standard of education in the Walled City and started working on eradication of such deterrents for students.

The fundamental aim of this organization is to improve the educational values/standards of the historical Walled City. It is engaged in the promotion of the education and social development and upliftment of the people belonging to lower-income groups, irrespective of sex, creed, religion, caste, or class.

DYWA takes several sincere steps to sensitize and enlighten the masses towards the significance of education not only to equip the underprivileged sections of society but also to provide wings to unleash their potential. Our association has adopted 15 children and has financed their studies completely so that the financial crunch is not a hindrance to their achieving their goals. As part of its customary practice, DYWA distributes free course material, provides coaching and educational assistance, facilitates the students to opt for the best career option by providing career counseling sessions, and also provides constant motivation and encouragement to the children.
