Story

Chennai Kalai Theru Vizha -- A festival that celebrates all art forms, people, stages and all spaces as equal, and revels in Chennai's cultural diversity.

Celebrated for four years as the Urur Olcott Kuppam Vizha in a fishing village in South Chennai, the festival is now set to move to the cultural melting pot of North Chennai -- the birthplace of Gaana -- with a new name, the Chennai Kalai Theru Vizha (Street Festival). With its vibrant neighbourhoods and rich street life, with multicultural cuisines and mouth-watering delicacies, North Chennai is also the birthplace of Gaana music and the energetic kuththu dance.

The Vizha has never been just about music and dance, but about the possibilities that these arts offer in uniting people, and liberating spaces in an act of celebration. The festival is designed to educate and liberate audiences and artists, to take art from exclusive stages to inclusive spaces, and making all art forms accessible to all audiences.

In the past years, spaces that have only witnessed traditional tamil art forms like theru-k-koothu, kummi and parai-aattam have supported stages for kuchipudi, indie rock, carnatic music and panchavaathiyam. Esoteric spaces like the sabhas of Chennai which had never hosted anything but Carnatic or Bharatanatyam threw their doors open and exposed their regular audiences to Gaana, Silambattam and the hauntingly divine melodies of the Jogappas, a troupe of transgender artists.

Co-organised by volunteers from Chennai, the youth of Korukkupet and the villagers of Ennore, the Chennai Kalai Theru Vizha is a volunteer-driven, crowd-funded effort that will host arts performances in venues across the city -- in Besant Nagar, Thiruvalluvar Nagar, Korukkupet and Ennore -- and on North-bound MTC route buses.
