Why am I fundraising?I teach 43 students of Grade 6 at low income private school in Pune.
One of the smartest students in my class Payal Tungaria, left for her village in Rajasthan at the end of the academic year 2014-15. Reason: Parents didn't have money to sustain their livelihood in Pune. I got phone call from her mother describing how heartbroken she is in the new environment she has been forced to adjust.
Short Term Problem:
5 of my students are unable to pay fees for school and were on the verge of quiting the school. I have convinced them to stay with a promise that i will help them monetarily.
Long term Problem
Most the parents are either in furniture making, construction, tiling or in painting by profession. Since these jobs are seasonal, they tend have problem in having sustainable source of income.
What do I plan to do with the funds?Solution (Short Term)
Fees for the students will be given to the parents as a loan. The money repaid by the parents will be kept aside for any future needs.Solution (Long Term)
I have spoken to an NGO which will teach the mothers of my students vocational skills like paper bag making. A part of this money will used to open savings account for students for future education while others can payback the loan.
Also I plan to have session on financial literacy sessions for the parents to save smartly.
