Story

Every child deserves a great teacher!

For the last year I have been associated with the NGO called CEQUE.

Centre for Equity and Quality in Universal Education (CEQUE) is a non-profit company incorporated in 2012 under Section 25 of the Companies Act, 1956. CEQUE empowers teachers with teaching skills to provide quality learning for every child.

CEQUE’s goal is to coach promising teachers to become innovative and effective teachers, create open source lesson videos of their innovative lesson ideas as taught in their classrooms, and catalyse learnings for the wider teaching community, enabling them to learn and integrate innovative methods in their classrooms.

The Teacher Pages Innovator Fellowship is a unique hands-on coaching programme, which enables promising teachers to become more effective AND scale their impact.

Annually, selected teachers are coached to develop and teach innovative Language and Math lesson ideas effectively, for grades 1-10.

These lesson ideas are then professionally filmed in the teachers’ own classrooms and edited to create short high quality lesson videos of 5-10 min duration.

Upon completion the videos are uploaded on our Youtube Channel as an open source resource for the teaching community. (www.youtube.com/teacherpages)

Story of Change:

Vaibhavi Gawade, Anuyog Vidyalaya, Mumbai

I was always interested in teaching children and wanted to teach them in such a way that they enjoyed learning in classroom. The limitations of working with a textbook and syllabus made this difficult. With the intent of learning something different as a teacher and doing something new, I joined this fellowship with CEQUE.

The fellowship was an eye-opener in many ways. It helped me develop as a reflective practitioner. It made me relook at my method of teaching very minutely for each step of a classroom lesson and helped me understand how my actions as a teacher directly impacts students and their actions.

I learnt how teaching in a classroom should be driven by specific and achievable objectives to identify student achievement and build on it progressively. This fellowship made me realize that the aims of constructivist education as laid out in the Pragat Shaikshanik Maharashtra government resolution is actually realizable in the classroom. It equipped me to look at language teaching as developing skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing, as opposed to completing the content of the syllabus.

A permanent difference that has come about in my teaching is that I don’t impart information to students anymore. Instead, I facilitate students’ learning now by helping them construct their own knowledge. So, if you come to my class, you will not see me explaining a chapter or making students write questions and answers anymore. You will see me asking open-ended questions to elicit multiple student responses in class.
