A catalyst for Hope ....
8 years have passed since I first encountered breast cancer. While in hospital dealing with the experience of my own breast cancer treatment, I became acutely aware of the the lack of awareness and disparities in cancer care. Every year thousands of women are touched by breast cancer. It not only has an impact on individuals with the disease, but their families, friends and loved ones as well. Timely, appropriate medical consultation and counseling is a luxury many women do not have and the situation is much worse when somebody is disadvantaged because of lower socioeconomic and educational status
At this crucial moment in life , I started Penn Nalam - which means Women's Health in Tamil , a unit of Sri Dhanvantri trust with the support of my family members.
Two main objectives became clear to me.
1. To create awareness about breast cancer and bring world class treatment facility to women in India.
2. To provide an atmosphere that induces path breaking discovery to prevent, detect and cure breast cancer.
With a team of committed doctors lead by Dr.Selvi Radhakrishna, a breast cancer surgeon , we are now embarking on an exciting new phase – To broaden our horizon with “CHENNAI BREAST CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION”, a one stop center of excellence envisioned to provide leadership, best practices, research, support and training in breast cancer along with sufficient , affordable and easily accessible breast cancer services for all irrespective of their socioeconomic status.
We are raising money to build and equip the hospital.
Every little helps ...
What we have achieved so far...
We have made considerable progress in creating awareness amongst women, particularly the socio-economically disadvantaged, using innovative techniques like screening documentaries in English and Tamil, talks, puppetry, street plays and mimes about breast cancer to various women's organizations including self help groups, women associations, employees of public and private sector organizations, urban and rural women.
We offer screening at our centre in Mandaveli and at doorstep through our mobile units.
We conduct workshops and education programs for medical and nursing staff on best practices.
Patients with breast cancer are supported with peer groups, yoga, counseling, physiotherapy and advise regarding lifestyle modifications
