Care for KARE

“Education is the most powerful weapon which we can use to change the world”

Every day, as the sun rises, around 500 children of Kurmaguda, Hyderabad, who come from low income families, wake up and get ready to leave their homes and go to school. For them, school is a place where they can learn things that their community does not teach them. School is a place where they can experiment, experience, learn and unlearn, and get opportunities/exposure that might not be available in their community.

Akash, Sonal, Swastika and I (Phani) are 4 Teach For India Fellows who joined KARE school last year. Because it happens to be a free school where the management has to depend on external help (as the students aren’t charged a tuition fee), the resources that we have are limited. There is a lack of boards, benches, doors, science lab(s) (especially for the higher grades), fun tools to teach Math and English, a lack of physical space for conducting extra-curricular activities etc... All these factors are making it all the more difficult for us to work towards our goal which is to create a holistic learning experience for all and drive the society towards a healthier lifestyle.  The presence of science labs, computer labs, and good reading books in a school can aid with expanding knowledge and a child’s senses while building the spirit of inquiry, which could help children take better decisions for themselves whenever they’re required to.

We have had multiple conversations with the children and their parents. We realized that it is important for the children to be able to make their own choices and not opt for what’s already given, which would also promote student leadership. We believe that it’s every human being’s right to dream, and to follow those dreams. To be able to make our goal a reality, the below-mentioned resources would make the path easier for us and for the children.

Hence, we wanted to use this platform to extend our hands for support, so that we have all the resources to provide a holistic learning experience for all. We welcome any kind of help we can get, be it in the form of donations, materials or knowledge, and your well wishes and blessings for our kids.
We hope that you can lend us a helping hand and be a part of this movement which is going to make sure India’s future is in safe hands!

These are some of the things that we’re looking to raise funds for:
  • Projector
  • Microscopes
  • Other Lab apparatuses
  • Math kits for primary and secondary classes
  • English kits for primary and secondary classes
  • Audio and Visual aids for all the subjects for all the classrooms
  • Organizing field trips
If you’d like to know more about our children, their classrooms and needs, or would like to understand more about our work at Teach for India, please reach out to us at phani.krishna2017@teachforindia.org , sonal.dahiya2017@teachforindia.org , swastika.b2017@teachforindia.org or akash.rm2017@teachforindia.org

Hey supporters!

The students of KARE school and the staff are extremely grateful and thankful to all of you for helping us out in developing our school!

The money that we withdrew earlier, which was 17k, was used for various things. We digitalized a few of our classrooms to cater to all the audio-visual learners. If a picture speaks a thousand words, a video speaks a lot more! Teaching and learning has become so much more fun. The engagement levels have raised. IXL is being used to give the children a lot of practice in math and english!

As we mentioned in our previous update, we used a major part of the money to set up a science lab. We got a microscope, basic lab apparatus, prepared slides and a few other things! All our science classes have gotten so much more interesting now, with the children seeing what the textbook wants them to learn!

A major part in any school is safety during and after school for students and resources. As funds are being raised to improve the resources in school, the concerns for safety started to raise. Thats when the idea of having CCTV in school came up. Part of the funds raised were diverted to setting up the system in the school.

We'd like to thank each one of you once again for making our dream a reality!

Our next goal is to make the washrooms hygienic, get doors for the classrooms, and get a fence for the terrace.

The washrooms in our school have no doors, leading to no privacy at all. Most of the times, due to old pipes, the washrooms get blocked and the drainage water flows into the school. This, as we all know, can lead to several diseases.
KARE is infamous for it's extremely small classrooms. This leads to a lot of space constraint issues. Also, with classrooms not having doors and literally facing each other during class hours, the school becomes a shouting competition for teachers because of the noise. We want to solve this by getting doors for classrooms that face each other. As the kids are going into higher grades, it's important for them to stay focussed, and that'll happen only if they're given a silent environment.

We hope all of you continue supporting us, so that we can make the lives of so many children easier and better!

Thank you so much on behalf of everyone once again!

Thank you so much for supporting us! We and our kids are extremely grateful for all the love and the warm wishes!

We've raised 37,000(approx) so far, out of which, we're using 17000 to start a science lab in our school. We're purchasing a few basic items from online platforms and from local stores. As more funds keep coming in, we'll expand the science lab and also use the funds for other needs. We will upload the bills and pictures of all the items we're purchasing, soon. Here's a tentative list of items we're planning to buy to expose children to the world of practical science :

1. Microscopes
2. Thermometers
3. Cupboard
4. Bunsen Burner
5. Test tube set
6. Basic lab apparatus
7. Fire extinguisher
8. Chemicals
9. Pre-prepared slides
10. Concave and Convex lens etc.

11. Human Skeleton Model

We're inaugrating the science lab in KARE school on Saturday (28/07/2018). Expect an update from us with lots and lots of pictures on that day! If you're in or around Hyderabad, please do join us on Saturday!!!
