Teenage and Young Adult Cancer Foundation

    from Indore

TYACAN (Teenage and Young Adult Cancer Foundation) is a non-profit organisation engaged in treatment of under privileged cancer patients 15- 29 years of age.

The Facts
1. 80000 Teenagers/Young Adults are diagnosed with Cancer every year in India.
2. This translates to 200 cases per day.
3. Half of these young patients die the same year

The Problem
1. When a teenager is informed of the diagnosis, his/her whole world collapses
2. Their education, job, marriage, relationships... everything falls apart for them
3. On the verge of becoming independent, their autonomy gets reversed and they become more dependent after the diagnosis.
4. Hospital environment is very intimidating for these young patients
5. Neither their family nor the medical team is able to make them understand the changes in life brought on by cancer and it's treatment
6. Depression, anxiety, fear and a dreadful feeling that they are alone dominate their minds
7. Being in a ward with older patients elevates negativity, fear and feeling of hopelessness
8. There is a high level of treatment abandonment leading to death of these young patients

The Solution
It has been scientifically and empirically proven globally that providing an "Age Appropriate" space to  young cancer patients not only helps them in overcoming depression, anxiety and other types of negativities, it also speeds up their recovery and helps them in enduring the effects of treatment.

Our CANSPA Project for Teenage Cancer Patients
AGE APPROPRIATE CANCER CARE SPACE or "CANSPA" is a collaborative effort by TYACan & NUVO Designs Pvt. Ltd. (Pune) to create a space that provides Physical, Emotional, Psychological, Spiritual, Social and Vocational rehabilitation to teenage cancer patients.

CANSPA is a treatment cum social sphere within the hospital/centre yet completely detached from a typical hospital environment.

CANSPA helps young patients to:
- recover, relax and ‘be themselves”
- adjust to the changes they experience as after effects of treatment
- give them a break from anxiety, fear and depression
- divert their minds to happier and positive thoughts

Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Science (Indore) has already provided the space of 1200 soft. for development of the First CANSPA in India. Our plan is to develop 8 to 12 CANSPA's across the country.
